High Impact Polystyrene is a modified polystyrene material designed to overcome the relatively brittle behavior of standard General Purpose Polystyrene. A rubber-modified phase improves toughness while maintaining useful rigidity and processing performance.
HIPS is normally opaque rather than highly transparent. White and black are common commercial colors, while custom colors and application-specific surface finishes can also be produced according to the project.
The material is commonly selected for high-volume thermoformed, printed and fabricated products where buyers require a cost-effective combination of impact resistance, lightweight construction and easy processing.
This HSQY product is a solid High Impact Polystyrene sheet. It should not be confused with expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam insulation board.

| Thermal Insulation | Not the primary function of this product | Primary function of many EPS/XPS boards |
Improved impact resistance: Rubber modification provides better toughness and resistance to cracking than standard GPPS.
Good thermoformability: Suitable HIPS grades can be vacuum formed or thermoformed into trays, liners, covers and housings.
Lightweight and rigid: HIPS provides useful stiffness while keeping finished components relatively lightweight.
Easy fabrication: HIPS can be cut, routed, drilled, die cut and CNC machined using suitable processing methods.
Printable surface: Suitable sheet surfaces can support screen, digital and other printing processes after compatibility testing.
Paintable and decorative: Compatible coatings, labels and laminates can be applied where required.
Custom colors: White, black and project-specific colors can be discussed according to production requirements.
Cost-effective processing: HIPS is commonly selected for volume thermoforming and fabricated applications where an economical rigid plastic is required.
HIPS can be thermoformed into protective trays, inserts, clamshell-style components and other rigid packaging structures where impact resistance and dimensional stability are important.
Packaging buyers should specify the tray dimensions, forming depth, required stiffness, stacking design, product weight and any regulatory requirement before selecting a material grade.
Standard HIPS should not automatically be described as suitable for food, pharmaceutical or medical contact. Those applications require confirmation of the exact material grade and applicable documentation.
Thermoforming is one of the main commercial applications for HIPS sheet. The sheet is heated until sufficiently pliable and then shaped against a mold using vacuum, pressure or mechanical assistance.
HIPS is commonly used for trays, liners, equipment covers, housings, display components and appliance parts because suitable grades combine good formability with greater toughness than standard polystyrene.
| Thermoforming Factor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Starting Thickness | Controls the amount of material available before stretching |
| Heating Uniformity | Supports consistent forming and surface appearance |
| Draw Depth | Deep draws can reduce wall thickness in critical areas |
| Mold Geometry | Corners, ribs and cavity depth affect material distribution |
| Finished Wall Thickness | Should be checked on the actual thermoformed component |
| Impact Performance | Should be verified on the finished component where mechanical performance is critical |
HIPS is frequently evaluated for refrigerator liners, interior appliance panels, housings, covers and trays because it combines thermoforming performance, rigidity, surface appearance and economical processing.
For appliance applications, buyers should specify operating temperature, detergent or chemical exposure, forming depth, impact requirement, color and surface appearance before approving a grade.
HIPS can be used for retail signage, POP/POS displays, advertising panels, exhibition graphics and promotional components where low weight, sheet rigidity and easy fabrication are useful.
Printing performance depends on sheet surface, ink chemistry, curing conditions and any required surface treatment. Printing companies should test the actual production grade before commercial printing.
HIPS can be cut or thermoformed into lightweight equipment covers, non-structural housings, protective panels and fabricated enclosures.
Projects should define impact requirements, unsupported span, fastening method, operating temperature and environmental exposure so sheet thickness and grade can be selected appropriately.
Selected HIPS grades can be considered for non-structural automotive interior trim and formed components where economical processing, appearance and moderate impact performance are required.
Automotive projects should specify heat resistance, impact performance, odor, emissions, flammability and OEM-specific requirements. Standard HIPS should not automatically be treated as automotive-qualified material.

Surface quality is important when HIPS is used for displays, signage, appliance parts and decorative panels. Smooth, gloss, matte or application-specific surface requirements should be defined before production.
Suitable HIPS grades can support printing, painting, labeling and lamination. Final performance depends on surface condition, ink or coating chemistry, curing process and post-processing operations.
HIPS can be cut, drilled, routed, die cut and CNC machined using appropriate tools and processing conditions. This allows the material to be supplied as flat panels or converted into custom fabricated components.
Tool geometry, feed speed and heat generation should be controlled according to thickness to maintain clean edges and dimensional accuracy.
Standard HIPS is primarily used indoors or in controlled environments. Extended outdoor exposure should not be assumed unless the exact grade has been formulated and tested for the required UV and weathering conditions.
For outdoor projects, specify expected sunlight exposure, temperature range, service life and appearance requirements so a suitable stabilized grade or alternative material can be evaluated.
HIPS has low water absorption and can tolerate selected mild chemical environments, but its resistance varies substantially by chemical type and operating conditions.
If the finished component will contact cleaners, oils, alcohols, solvents or other chemicals, provide the chemical name, concentration, temperature and exposure duration before approving the material.
