What Is BOPET/PE Sealing Film?

BOPET/PE sealing film, also known as BOPET/PE lidding film, polyester/PE tray film or laminated top-seal film, is a flexible packaging material that combines a biaxially oriented PET outer layer with a PE-based food-contact sealing layer.

The BOPET layer provides transparency, gloss, tensile strength, stiffness, dimensional stability and a printable surface. The modified PE layer provides heat-sealing performance against a compatible PE, modified-polyolefin or PE-coated tray flange.

What Is the Difference Between BOPET/PE and PET/PE Film?

PET/PE is a general material description for a film containing a polyester layer and a polyethylene sealing layer.

BOPET/PE is a more specific PET/PE structure in which the PET outer film has been biaxially oriented during production.

Biaxial orientation improves tensile strength, stiffness, dimensional stability, optical appearance and processing performance. For this reason, BOPET is commonly selected as the outer layer of printed tray-lidding laminates.

Easy-Peel BOPET/PE Lidding Film

Easy-peel BOPET/PE film is designed to provide package integrity during filling, storage and transportation while allowing the consumer to remove the lid with controlled force.

The modified PE sealant controls the way the film separates from the compatible tray flange.

Lock-Seal BOPET/PE Lidding Film

Lock-seal BOPET/PE film, also called weld-seal or permanent-seal film, produces a stronger and substantially non-easy-peel closure.

It is selected when liquid containment, tamper evidence, gas retention and transport security are more important than consumer peelability.

Lock-seal packages may require cutting, puncturing or tearing before use. The film should not be promoted as easy peel unless a different sealant formulation is supplied and validated.

Anti-Fog BOPET/PE Film

Anti-fog treatment changes the way condensed moisture behaves on the food-facing film surface.

Instead of forming separate visible droplets, moisture spreads into a thinner and more transparent layer. Anti-fog film does not remove moisture and does not prevent condensation from occurring.

Performance depends on food temperature, moisture content, cooling speed, refrigeration temperature, temperature fluctuations, film orientation and storage duration.

Microwave, Oven and Freezer Compatibility

Can Standard BOPET/PE Film Be Microwaved?

Standard BOPET/PE film should not automatically be described as microwaveable.

Microwave applications require a dedicated thermal grade tested with the actual tray, food, power level, heating time and steam-release instructions.

Can BOPET/PE Film Be Used in a Conventional Oven?

Standard BOPET/PE film is not automatically ovenable. Conventional-oven packaging requires a separately validated high-temperature film and a compatible ovenable tray.

Can BOPET/PE Film Be Used for Frozen Food?

Selected low-temperature structures can be developed, but the standard lock-seal grade is not specified as freezer-safe.
