What Is PS HIPS Sheet Roll?

Polystyrene, commonly abbreviated as PS, is a thermoplastic material based on styrene. PS sheet roll is extruded as continuous thin-gauge material for high-volume converting, printing and thermoforming processes.

High Impact Polystyrene, or HIPS, is a modified polystyrene grade developed to provide greater toughness than standard general-purpose polystyrene while retaining useful rigidity and processing characteristics.

HIPS rollstock is commonly selected for thermoforming and vacuum-forming production because it can be converted continuously into trays, inserts, covers, packaging components and other formed parts.

PS vs HIPS Sheet Roll

Selection Factor Standard PS / GPPS HIPS
Material General-purpose polystyrene Impact-modified polystyrene
Appearance Can be clear or transparent depending on grade Commonly opaque or colored
Impact Performance Lower than impact-modified HIPS Higher toughness for forming and fabricated parts
Typical Priority Transparency, rigidity and economical processing Thermoforming, toughness, printing and packaging
Selection Confirm optical, forming and finished-product requirements Confirm impact, forming depth, color and surface requirements

PS HIPS Sheet Roll for Thermoforming

Thermoforming is one of the primary processing methods for HIPS rollstock. During production, the sheet is heated until formable and then shaped over or into a mold using vacuum, pressure or mechanical forming.

Starting thickness should be selected according to mold depth and finished-part geometry because material stretching during forming reduces local wall thickness, especially in corners and deeper cavities.

Thermoforming Requirement Information to Provide
Starting Thickness Required thickness within 0.2-2.0mm
Roll Width Machine-compatible width within 300-1400mm
Mold Dimensions Finished mold length and width
Forming Depth Maximum cavity depth or draw requirement
Finished Wall Minimum acceptable wall thickness after forming
Roll Weight 50-200kg or customized according to equipment limitations
Surface Glossy, matte or application-specific surface requirement
Color Pantone/RAL reference or approved physical sample

PS HIPS Sheet Roll for Printing

HIPS can be supplied for printing, signs, graphics, display components and branded packaging where a rigid printable plastic substrate is required.

Printing performance depends on the sheet surface, surface energy, ink chemistry, curing method and printing equipment. Buyers should identify the intended screen, offset, digital or UV-printing process before production.

Printing Requirement What to Confirm
Printing Method Screen, offset, digital, UV digital or another process
Ink System Ink chemistry and curing method
Surface Finish Glossy or matte requirement
Surface Treatment Corona or another treatment where required by the printing process
Color White, black, Pantone/RAL or customized base color

Standard and Functional HIPS Grades

Anti-static, conductive and static-dissipative properties are specialized functions and should not be assumed for standard HIPS sheet roll. Electrical performance must be specified before production.

Grade / Configuration Purchasing Requirement
Standard HIPS Thickness, width, surface, color and thermoforming requirements
Anti-static HIPS Required resistance range, test method and environmental conditions
Conductive HIPS Required conductivity or surface-resistance target
Static Dissipative HIPS Electrical target and intended electronic-packaging application
Printing / Coated Grade Printing process, coating system, adhesion and surface requirement
Barrier / EVOH Structure Required layer structure, barrier target, packaging application and test requirement

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PS HIPS sheet roll?

PS HIPS sheet roll is continuous polystyrene rollstock used for thermoforming, vacuum forming, die cutting, printing and selected packaging or industrial converting applications.

What is the difference between PS and HIPS?

Standard general-purpose PS is comparatively rigid and brittle, while HIPS is impact-modified to provide greater toughness. HIPS is commonly selected for thermoforming, packaging and printing applications requiring better impact performance.

What thicknesses are available?

The PS HIPS sheet roll specification covers thicknesses from 0.2mm to 2.0mm.

What roll widths are available?

Available widths range from 300mm to 1400mm. Provide your thermoforming-machine or converting-line width when requesting a quotation.

What is the roll weight?

Roll weights range from approximately 50kg to 200kg and can also be customized according to equipment and transport requirements.

Can HIPS sheet roll be thermoformed?

Yes. Thermoforming and vacuum forming are major processing applications for suitable HIPS sheet rolls. Mold geometry, forming depth and required finished-wall thickness should be evaluated before finalizing the starting gauge.

Can PS HIPS sheet roll be printed?

Yes. HIPS can be used for printing applications. Printing compatibility depends on surface finish, ink chemistry, printing equipment and any required surface treatment.

Are anti-static and conductive grades available?

Anti-static, conductive and static-dissipative configurations are available as specialized options. Specify the required electrical-resistance range and test method rather than assuming standard HIPS has these properties.

Can HIPS sheet roll be used for food packaging?

Selected PS or HIPS grades can be considered for food-packaging applications. The exact resin, additives and applicable food-contact documentation must be confirmed according to the destination market, food type and use conditions.

What is the MOQ?

The minimum order quantity is 1 ton.

What information should I provide for a quotation?

Please provide the material grade, thickness, roll width, roll weight, surface, color, transparency, processing method, functional requirement, quantity, destination and required documents.
