BOPET/CPP Sealing Film

What Is BOPET/CPP Sealing Film?

BOPET/CPP sealing film, also known as BOPET/CPP lidding film or polyester/CPP tray film, is a laminated flexible packaging material that combines a biaxially oriented PET outer layer with a cast polypropylene sealing layer.

The BOPET layer provides transparency, gloss, tensile strength, dimensional stability and a printable surface. The CPP layer provides heat-sealing performance, hot tack, flexibility and moisture resistance against a compatible polypropylene or modified-polyolefin tray flange.

HSQY supplies both easy-peel BOPET/CPP lidding film and lock-seal BOPET/CPP lidding film for compatible PP food trays.

Film structure, seal strength, roll dimensions and functional treatments can be customized according to the tray material, packaged food, sealing machine and distribution conditions.

How Is BOPET/CPP Lidding Film Structured?

Film Component Main Function Packaging Benefit
BOPET Outer Layer Structural and printable layer Provides clarity, gloss, tensile strength, stiffness and dimensional stability
Printing Ink Optional branding and information layer Supports logos, graphics, product information, barcodes and registration marks
Lamination Adhesive Bonds the BOPET and CPP films Maintains laminate integrity during sealing, storage and transportation
CPP Sealant Layer Food-facing heat-seal layer Provides easy-peel or lock-seal performance against a compatible PP sealing surface
Optional Anti-Fog Treatment Improves surface wettability Helps reduce visible condensation droplets in chilled packaging

The CPP formulation determines the seal-initiation temperature, hot-tack strength, peel force, lock-seal strength and compatibility with the tray flange.

Easy-Peel BOPET/CPP Lidding Film

Easy-peel BOPET/CPP film is designed to form a secure seal during filling, transportation and storage while allowing the consumer to remove the lid progressively from a peel tab.

A properly matched easy-peel film should provide:

  • Controlled peel-initiation force

  • Stable peel-propagation force

  • One-piece film removal

  • Limited tearing, shredding or stringing

  • Minimal residue on the tray flange

  • Sufficient package integrity during distribution

  • Consistent opening after chilled storage

Review HSQY's            easy-peel BOPET/CPP lidding film        for consumer-friendly PP tray packaging.

Lock-Seal BOPET/CPP Lidding Film

Lock-seal BOPET/CPP film creates a stronger or substantially non-peelable bond with a compatible PP tray flange.

It is selected when leakage resistance, tamper evidence, transport stability and resistance to accidental opening are more important than manual peelability.

Lock-seal packages may require cutting, puncturing or tearing before use. They should not be promoted as easy-open packaging unless a separate peelable sealant has been developed.

Review HSQY's            lock-seal BOPET/CPP lidding film        for secure PP tray closures.

Easy Peel vs. Lock Seal

Comparison Easy Peel Lock Seal
Opening Method Controlled manual peeling Cutting, puncturing or stronger tearing may be required
Consumer Convenience Higher Lower
Package Security Balanced with opening convenience Stronger resistance to accidental opening
Typical Applications Salads, desserts, dairy products and consumer-ready meals Liquid-rich foods, transport-sensitive meals and tamper-evident packs
Main Risk Insufficient peel strength can reduce package integrity Excessive seal strength can tear the film or damage the tray

Which Trays Can BOPET/CPP Film Seal?

The CPP layer is primarily designed to seal against a compatible PP or modified-polyolefin tray surface.

Tray Material Compatibility Guidance
PP Tray Primary application, subject to PP grade, tray surface and sealing tests
PP/EVOH/PP Tray May be compatible when the tray's sealing surface is PP; MAP barrier must be verified separately
PP/EVOH/PE Tray Compatibility depends on whether the sealing flange presents PP, PE or another modified layer
Plain APET or rPET Tray Standard CPP should not automatically be expected to seal directly to PET
PET/PE Tray PET/PE or BOPET/PE lidding film is normally more appropriate for a PE flange
CPET Tray Requires a CPET-compatible film, especially for microwave or oven use
PS, PVC or Aluminum Tray Requires a substrate-specific sealant or coating
Coated Paperboard Tray Compatibility depends on the polymer coating applied to the paperboard flange

Physical tray samples or a complete tray-layer specification should be provided before confirming a bulk film order.

For broader PP tray-film selection, review HSQY's            sealing film for PP trays    .

Applications of BOPET/CPP Lidding Film

Chilled Ready Meals

BOPET/CPP films can be used for chilled pasta, rice dishes, cooked meat, vegetables, sauces and prepared meals packed in compatible PP trays.

Takeaway and Meal-Prep Packaging

Lock-seal or easy-peel films can be selected for central kitchens, catering companies, meal-prep suppliers and takeaway food packaging.

Fresh Meat and Poultry

Application-specific films can be evaluated for beef, pork, chicken, turkey and prepared meat products.

Meat packaging may also require anti-fog treatment, puncture resistance, contamination sealing and an EVOH high-barrier structure.

Fish and Seafood

Fish fillets, shrimp, shellfish and prepared seafood may use BOPET/CPP film when the required moisture, puncture and gas-barrier performance has been verified.

Salads, Fruit and Vegetables

Easy-peel and anti-fog versions can be used for prepared salads, cut fruit, vegetables and chilled produce.

Respiring produce may require perforation or controlled gas transmission rather than a fully hermetic film.

Dairy and Desserts

Applications include cheese portions, dairy desserts, puddings, mousse and other refrigerated foods packed in compatible PP trays.

Bakery and Confectionery

Clear or printed BOPET/CPP films can be used for cakes, pastries, confectionery and bakery trays where product visibility and moisture protection are required.

Standard BOPET/CPP vs. EVOH High-Barrier PP Film

Standard BOPET/CPP film provides useful moisture resistance, mechanical strength and sealability. It should not automatically be classified as a high-oxygen-barrier MAP film.

Comparison Standard BOPET/CPP EVOH/PP High-Barrier Film
Oxygen Barrier General or moderate, depending on thickness and structure Designed for lower oxygen transmission
Moisture Barrier Good due to the CPP layer Good when EVOH is protected by PP layers
MAP Suitability Requires application-specific evaluation More suitable for validated MAP systems
Typical Application General chilled meals, produce, dairy and bakery packaging Meat, poultry, seafood, cheese and oxygen-sensitive foods

For MAP and oxygen-sensitive food, review HSQY's            EVOH/PP high-barrier lidding film    .

Anti-Fog BOPET/CPP Film

Anti-fog treatment is optional for HSQY BOPET/CPP films and must be confirmed as part of the final specification.

Anti-fog treatment changes the way condensed moisture spreads over the food-facing surface. It reduces visible droplets but does not remove moisture from the package.

Anti-fog performance depends on:

  • Food filling temperature

  • Product moisture content

  • Cooling speed

  • Refrigerated storage temperature

  • Temperature fluctuations

  • Film orientation

  • Required performance duration

Microwave, Oven, Freezer and Retort Use

Can Standard BOPET/CPP Film Be Microwaved?

No. The current standard HSQY easy-peel and lock-seal products are not specified as microwaveable.

Microwave applications require a dedicated film tested with the actual PP tray, food, microwave power, heating time and steam-release instructions.

Can Standard BOPET/CPP Film Be Used in an Oven?

No. Standard BOPET/CPP film should not be used in a conventional oven unless a dedicated high-temperature structure has been validated.

Can Standard BOPET/CPP Film Be Frozen?

The current standard products are not specified as freezer-safe.

Frozen-food packaging requires a dedicated low-temperature CPP grade tested for impact resistance, flexibility, seal retention and laminate integrity.

Can Standard BOPET/CPP Film Be Retorted?

No. Retort packaging requires a separately designed retort-grade CPP, high-temperature adhesive and validated multilayer structure.

Retort validation must include processing temperature, pressure, duration, food composition, seal integrity and post-retort laminate strength.

Tray-Sealing Machine Compatibility

BOPET/CPP rollstock can be converted for manual, semi-automatic, rotary and fully automatic tray sealing machines.

Buyers should confirm:

  • Machine manufacturer and model

  • Tray mold and cavity layout

  • Finished film width

  • Core inside diameter

  • Maximum roll outside diameter

  • Maximum roll weight

  • CPP sealing side wound inside or outside

  • Film unwind direction

  • Sealing temperature

  • Sealing pressure

  • Dwell time

  • Production speed

  • Film-cutting system

  • Registration-mark sensor

  • Atmospheric or MAP packaging process

HSQY also supplies            food tray sealing machines        for standard heat sealing and selected MAP packaging lines.

How to Establish the Correct Sealing Window

A sealing window is the range of temperature, pressure and dwell time that creates a continuous seal without damaging the tray or film.

Production trials should evaluate:

  • Seal-initiation temperature

  • Maximum temperature before film or tray distortion

  • Required sealing pressure

  • Minimum effective dwell time

  • Hot-tack strength

  • Seal strength after cooling

  • Peel-initiation and peel-propagation force

  • One-piece opening behavior

  • Seal-through-contamination performance

  • Wrinkle and channel-leak formation

  • Tray-flange deformation

  • Film tracking and cutting at production speed

  • Leak and burst resistance

Common BOPET/CPP Sealing Problems

Problem Possible Causes Items to Check
Film Does Not Seal Incompatible tray, reversed film, insufficient heat or poor tool contact Tray flange, CPP sealing side, temperature, pressure and dwell time
Weak or Inconsistent Seal Flange contamination, uneven tray, unstable temperature or low pressure Flange cleanliness, tray flatness, sealing tool and machine controls
Easy-Peel Film Is Difficult to Open Excessive heat, pressure or dwell time, or an incorrect CPP sealant grade Confirm the easy-peel grade and reduce sealing energy within the validated range
Seal Opens Too Easily Insufficient sealing energy or excessively weak peel formulation Film grade, tray surface, temperature, pressure and conditioning time
Film Tears Instead of Peeling Seal strength exceeds film strength or the tray has an inadequate peel tab Film thickness, sealant formulation, peel force and tab design
Wrinkles in the Seal Uneven web tension, poor tracking, tray distortion or tool misalignment Roll tension, web alignment, tray position and seal-plate flatness
Package Leaks Food contamination, film punctures, cracked trays or incomplete seals Flange cleanliness, film integrity, tray condition and seal continuity

Custom-Printed BOPET/CPP Film

The BOPET outer layer provides a stable printing surface for branded tray packaging.

Printed-film projects can include:

  • Brand logos and product names

  • Ingredient and nutritional information

  • Storage and opening instructions

  • Barcodes and QR codes

  • Date-code areas

  • Transparent product windows

  • Registration marks for automatic tray sealers

Buyers should provide artwork, film width, print repeat, number of colors, eye-mark position, tray orientation and CPP sealing-side winding direction.

Food-Contact Compliance

Food-contact suitability depends on the exact BOPET resin, CPP formulation, lamination adhesive, anti-fog treatment, printing ink, food type, contact duration and storage temperature.

Buyers should request documentation for the approved commercial film, including available:

  • Technical data sheet

  • Certificate of analysis

  • Food-contact declaration

  • Migration or compliance reports

  • Seal-strength test method

  • Restricted-substance statements

  • Batch traceability information

ISO 9001 is a quality-management-system certification and should not be presented as product-specific proof that every BOPET/CPP film complies with all food-contact regulations.

Is BOPET/CPP Film Recyclable?

BOPET and CPP belong to different polymer families. A BOPET/CPP laminate should not automatically be described as a mono-material or universally recyclable film.

Actual recyclability depends on:

  • BOPET-to-CPP ratio

  • Lamination adhesive

  • Printing inks and anti-fog treatments

  • Tray material

  • Ability to separate the film from the tray

  • Food contamination

  • Local collection and sorting infrastructure

  • Destination-market design-for-recycling requirements

PP-rich mono-material lidding films can be evaluated as a separate recycling-focused alternative when required.
