Coated BOPET Lidding Film for CPET Trays

Coated BOPET Lidding Film for CPET Trays

HSQY supplies coated BOPET lidding film for CPET trays in easy-peel and lock-seal grades for ready meals, prepared foods, catering packs and other tray-sealing applications.

The film uses a dimensionally stable BOPET base with a functional heat-seal coating developed to interact with a compatible CPET tray flange. Seal strength, peel performance, roll dimensions, printing and optional anti-fog properties can be customized according to the tray, food product and sealing equipment.

Because different CPET trays may use different surface formulations, the final film grade should always be verified using the buyer’s actual tray sample and production-line conditions.

What Is Coated BOPET Lidding Film?

Coated BOPET lidding film is a biaxially oriented polyester film with a functional sealing coating applied to one side. The BOPET base provides clarity, strength, stiffness, puncture resistance, printability and stable web handling, while the coating creates either controlled peel or strong adhesion to the selected tray sealing surface.

Unlike a conventional BOPET/PE or BOPET/CPP laminated film, the sealing function of coated BOPET film is primarily created by the surface coating. This structure can provide a clean appearance, consistent machinability and application-specific seal performance.

The coating chemistry must be matched to the tray material. A film designed for one CPET tray should not be assumed to seal correctly to every CPET, APET, PET/PE, PP or PS tray without testing.

Applications

Coated BOPET lidding films can be developed for a wide range of CPET food packaging applications, including:

  • Prepared meals and ready-to-heat food trays

  • Airline and institutional meal packaging

  • Catering and food-service trays

  • Pasta, rice, meat and vegetable meal packs

  • Sauce-containing and liquid-containing prepared foods

  • Single-compartment, two-compartment and three-compartment CPET trays

  • Clear or custom-printed retail food packaging

For oven, microwave, frozen-storage or high-barrier applications, the complete film, coating, ink, tray and food system must be separately specified and tested.

How to Select the Correct CPET Lidding Film

Selecting a lidding film only by the general description “CPET film” can lead to weak seals, excessive peel force, film shredding or leakage. Buyers should provide the following information before sampling or quotation:

  1. CPET tray supplier, product code, material structure, drawing or physical tray sample.

  2. Tray dimensions, flange width, peel-tab design, compartment layout and fill weight.

  3. Required easy-peel, hard-peel or lock-seal performance.

  4. Food type, filling temperature and possible oil, sauce, moisture or powder contamination.

  5. Chilled, ambient, frozen, microwave or conventional-oven conditions.

  6. Required anti-fog, barrier, venting, perforation or printing functions.

  7. Tray-sealing machine brand, model, tooling layout and production speed.

  8. Current sealing temperature, pressure and dwell time.

  9. Film width, roll length, core inside diameter, maximum outer diameter and winding direction.

  10. Required food-contact, migration, quality and destination-market documentation.

Tray-Sealing and Production-Line Validation

The practical sealing window depends on the actual CPET flange, coating grade, machine pressure, dwell time and commercial production speed. A laboratory seal result should therefore be followed by a production-line trial.

Common Problem

Possible Cause

Recommended Check

Film does not seal

Incorrect coating grade, wrong sealing side, low temperature, insufficient pressure or short dwell time

Confirm tray material, coating code, sealing orientation and sealing window

Peel force is too high

Excessive sealing temperature, pressure or dwell time, or an unsuitable coating grade

Reduce thermal input and test the correct easy-peel coating

Film shreds during opening

Excessive peel force, unsuitable film gauge or poor peel-tab geometry

Review film thickness, coating, peel angle and tray design

Seal leakage

Food contamination on the flange, uneven pressure, damaged tooling or insufficient seal continuity

Inspect flange cleanliness, tooling alignment and every sealing cavity

Film tracks inconsistently

Incorrect winding, roll tension, coefficient of friction or roll dimensions

Confirm roll direction, core, outer diameter, tension and machine setup

Frequently Asked Questions

What is coated BOPET lidding film?

Coated BOPET lidding film is a biaxially oriented PET film with a functional heat-seal coating. The BOPET base provides clarity and mechanical stability, while the coating creates adhesion or controlled peel from a compatible tray flange.

Can coated BOPET film seal to CPET trays?

Yes. A CPET-compatible coating grade can seal to a qualified CPET tray surface. However, the film should be tested with the actual tray because CPET surface formulations and flange conditions may vary between suppliers.

What is the difference between easy-peel and lock-seal film?

Easy-peel film provides controlled opening force for consumer convenience. Lock-seal film creates stronger, more permanent adhesion for applications that prioritize package integrity, leak resistance and tamper evidence.

Is coated BOPET lidding film oven safe?

Not every coated BOPET film is oven safe. Ovenable applications require a separately qualified thermal grade that has been tested with the complete CPET tray, film, coating, ink, food product, heating temperature and heating time.

Can the film be used in a microwave or freezer?

Microwave and freezer performance are grade-specific. The standard film should not be assumed to support these conditions unless the technical data sheet and package validation specifically confirm them.

Is anti-fog coated BOPET film available?

Yes. Anti-fog treatment can be added to suitable coated BOPET grades. Buyers should specify the storage temperature, humidity, test duration, anti-fog side and required acceptance standard.

Can coated BOPET lidding film be custom printed?

Yes. Custom printing can include logos, product information, cooking instructions, barcodes, QR codes, eye marks, date-code areas and transparent windows. Printing requirements should be confirmed before production.

What film sizes are available?

Reference options include thicknesses of 0.052–0.09 mm, standard widths of 180 mm, 320 mm, 400 mm and 640 mm, custom widths of approximately 150–900 mm and a reference roll length of 500 m. Final dimensions depend on the sealing machine and project requirements.

What determines the sealing temperature?

The sealing temperature depends on the coating grade, CPET flange surface, machine pressure, dwell time, tooling design and production speed. The correct sealing window should be established through testing rather than using one fixed temperature for every application.

Can HSQY provide samples for tray-sealing tests?

Yes. Buyers can provide a CPET tray sample, tray drawing, sealing-machine details and required seal performance. HSQY can recommend a suitable coated BOPET grade for laboratory and production-line testing.

What information is required for a quotation?

Please provide the CPET tray material and dimensions, required easy-peel or lock-seal performance, food application, storage and heating conditions, film thickness, roll width, roll length, core size, printing requirements, sealing-machine model, estimated order quantity and delivery destination.
