Depending on the approved film construction and retort process, PET/PA/RCPP lidding film can be developed for sterilization conditions from approximately 121°C up to 135°C. Final suitability must be verified using the buyer’s actual PP tray, food formulation, filling process, sealing equipment and retort cycle.

What Is PET/PA/RCPP Retortable Lidding Film?

PET/PA/RCPP retortable lidding film is a laminated flexible packaging material engineered to remain intact during high-temperature and high-pressure food sterilization.

After a PP tray has been filled and sealed, the complete package is placed in a retort chamber. During the sterilization cycle, the package is exposed to heat, moisture, pressure and mechanical stress. A qualified retort film must maintain laminate adhesion, seal integrity, puncture resistance and dimensional stability throughout the process.

Standard PET/PE, coated BOPET or conventional BOPET/CPP lidding films should not automatically be used for retort processing. Retort applications require RCPP, retort-grade adhesives, compatible inks and a fully validated multilayer structure.

Retort suitability cannot be determined by temperature alone. A commercial retort cycle also includes come-up time, holding time, pressure or counterpressure, cooling conditions and the geometry of the filled package.

Standard PET/PA/RCPP vs. High-Barrier Retort Film

Transparent PET/PA/RCPP provides strength, clarity and retort resistance, but it should not automatically be described as an ultra-high-barrier film. Oxygen-sensitive products may require an AlOx, aluminum foil or another enhanced-barrier structure.
