Because PP trays can use different resin grades, additives, recycled content, barrier layers and flange structures, the selected lidding-film grade must be tested with the buyer’s actual tray and sealing equipment before commercial production.

What Is Coated BOPET Lidding Film?

Coated BOPET lidding film is a biaxially oriented polyester film with a functional heat-seal coating applied to one side. The BOPET base provides clarity, gloss, tensile strength, dimensional stability, puncture resistance, printability and reliable web handling.

The coated side provides the sealing interaction with the PP tray flange. Different coating chemistries can be developed for easy-peel, hard-peel, lock-seal or anti-fog performance.

A PP-compatible coated BOPET film is different from a conventional BOPET/CPP laminated film. Coated BOPET obtains its sealing performance from a functional surface coating, while BOPET/CPP film uses a separate cast-polypropylene sealing layer laminated to the BOPET outer layer.

PP Tray Compatibility

The term “PP tray” covers several different tray structures. The film must be matched to the polymer presented on the tray’s sealing flange, not only to the general name of the tray.

For high-barrier or modified-atmosphere packaging, buyers must specify the required oxygen-transmission rate, water-vapor-transmission rate, gas mixture, target shelf life and complete tray structure. A standard coated BOPET film should not automatically be described as a high-barrier film.

Standard, Microwave and Retort Film Selection

Standard coated BOPET film, microwave-reheating film and retortable film are different product categories. The buyer should select the film according to the complete thermal process rather than relying only on the PP tray material.

How to Select the Correct PP Tray Lidding Film

  1. PP tray supplier, product code, resin grade, layer structure, drawing or physical tray sample.

  2. Tray dimensions, flange width, peel-tab design, compartment layout and tray color.

  3. Required easy-peel, hard-peel or lock-seal performance.

Sealing and Production-Line Validation

There is no single sealing temperature suitable for every PP tray. The practical sealing window depends on the coating grade, tray-flange material, machine pressure, dwell time, tooling condition and production speed.
