Description

19–100 Micron BOPET/PE Lidding Film for CPET Trays

HSQY supplies clear BOPET/PE lidding film for sealing compatible CPET food trays used for ready meals, frozen foods, airline catering, institutional meals and retail food packaging. The BOPET outer layer provides strength, dimensional stability, clarity and a printable surface, while the application-specific sealant layer is selected to create a secure seal on the tray flange.

Available thicknesses are listed from 19 to 100 microns, with custom roll widths and lengths available. Before production, please confirm whether the requested thickness refers to the BOPET base film or the total laminated structure, because this affects seal strength, stiffness, machine performance and final cost.

Tray material, flange condition, sealing temperature, pressure and dwell time must be tested together. Send us your tray material, tray dimensions, sealing-machine model, filling temperature and required peel performance so that we can recommend a suitable film structure and provide samples for validation.

What Is BOPET/PE Tray Lidding Film?

BOPET/PE tray lidding film is a laminated flexible packaging material. BOPET, or biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate, is normally used as the outer web because it provides mechanical strength, heat resistance, clarity and printability. The inner sealing layer is engineered to bond to a compatible tray surface under controlled heat, pressure and dwell time.

This product should not be treated as plain BOPET film. Plain BOPET generally requires a coating, lamination or specially modified sealing surface before it can reliably heat-seal to a food tray. The final structure must therefore be selected according to the tray material and end-use process.

Key Performance Benefits

  • Clear product presentation: High transparency supports retail display and visual inspection of the packed food.

  • Mechanical strength: The BOPET outer layer helps resist stretching, handling damage and dimensional distortion during converting and sealing.

  • Printable surface: Custom graphics, branding, cooking instructions, batch information and product identification can be added after artwork and ink-system approval.

  • Controlled seal performance: Easy-peel and stronger lock-seal options can be developed according to the tray flange and consumer-opening requirement.

  • Custom roll conversion: Width, roll length, core size, winding direction and splice requirements can be adjusted for compatible tray-sealing equipment.

  • Optional anti-fog performance: Anti-fog grades can improve visibility where warm or moisture-rich foods would otherwise create condensation.

How to Select the Correct Film Thickness

Film thickness should not be selected only by price. A thinner web can reduce material usage but may provide less stiffness and may be more sensitive to tension control. A thicker web can improve handling and puncture resistance but may require different sealing conditions and can increase packaging cost.

Selection Factor Why It Matters
Tray flange width and flatness A narrow, warped or contaminated flange can reduce seal consistency regardless of film thickness.
Machine speed and web tension High-speed lines require stable unwinding, tracking and tension control.
Food weight and product shape Heavy, sharp-edged or bone-in foods may require greater puncture resistance.
Distribution environment Frozen storage, chilled distribution, hot filling and oven reheating impose different performance requirements.
Peel requirement Consumer-friendly easy peel and tamper-resistant lock seal require different sealant designs.

Tray Compatibility and Seal Validation

Tray Material Compatibility Guidance
CPET trays Primary application for this page. Confirm the tray flange formulation, required peel force and heating process before production.
APET or RPET trays May require a PET-compatible easy-peel or lock-seal grade. Do not assume that the CPET grade will perform identically.
PP trays Normally requires a PP-compatible sealing layer, such as an appropriate BOPET/CPP or modified sealant structure.
Aluminum trays Requires a dedicated aluminum-compatible lacquer or sealant system and separate validation.

A production trial should establish the usable sealing window for temperature, pressure and dwell time. Seal strength should then be checked after filling, cooling, freezing, reheating and distribution simulation where applicable.

Applications of Custom BOPET/PE Lidding Film

  • Chilled and frozen ready-meal trays

  • Airline and railway catering meal trays

  • Institutional, hospital and school meal packaging

  • Prepared meat, pasta, rice and vegetable meals

  • Bakery, dessert and prepared-food trays

  • Retail and food-service CPET tray systems

Printing and OEM Customization

HSQY can customize film thickness, roll width, roll length, core size, winding direction, seal type, anti-fog performance and printed graphics. For printed film, provide the artwork file, color references, repeat length, registration tolerance, printing direction and expected annual volume.

Printed samples and production tolerances should be approved before mass production. Ink, adhesive and sealant systems must be selected according to the filling process, storage temperature and intended heating method.

Information Required for an Accurate Quotation

  • Tray material and tray supplier

  • Tray outside dimensions and flange width

  • Required film thickness or current film structure

  • Roll width, roll length, core diameter and maximum roll diameter

  • Sealing-machine brand and model

  • Easy-peel or lock-seal requirement

  • Transparent or printed film

  • Anti-fog, barrier or puncture-resistance requirement

  • Freezer, microwave, oven or retort process

  • Estimated order quantity and destination port

Quality and Certification Documents

Available quality documents should be checked against the exact film grade, material structure and destination market. ISO quality-system certification does not by itself prove food-contact compliance. Request the current technical data sheet, declaration of compliance, migration or food-contact test report and lot-specific quality documents required by your market.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between plain BOPET film and BOPET/PE lidding film?

Plain BOPET film is mainly used as a strong, clear and printable substrate. BOPET/PE lidding film adds a sealing layer so the film can bond to a compatible tray surface. The actual sealant formulation must match the tray material and processing conditions.

Can this film seal CPET food trays?

It is intended primarily for compatible CPET trays. However, CPET flange formulations and surface conditions vary, so HSQY should test the exact tray or receive a tray sample before confirming the film grade.

Is the 19–100 micron range the total laminate thickness?

The quotation should state whether the thickness refers to the BOPET base web or the complete laminated film. Confirm this point before comparing supplier prices because the two specifications are not equivalent.

Can you provide easy-peel and lock-seal versions?

Yes. Peel behavior can be adjusted through the sealant system, but the target peel force must be validated on the customer's tray and sealing machine.

Can the film be used in a microwave or conventional oven?

Microwave and oven suitability is grade-specific. Do not apply a general temperature claim to every BOPET/PE laminate. Provide the heating temperature, duration, food type and tray system so the complete package can be validated.

Can this lidding film seal PP or APET trays?

Not automatically. PP normally requires a PP-compatible sealing layer, while APET or RPET may require a PET-compatible peel or lock-seal grade. Specify the exact tray material before ordering.

Is anti-fog lidding film available?

Yes. Anti-fog can be added for products that generate condensation, subject to the food type, storage temperature and expected shelf life.

Can HSQY print our logo and product information on the film?

Yes. Custom printing is available after artwork, color, repeat length, registration direction and order quantity are confirmed. Printed proofs or samples should be approved before full production.

What causes weak or leaking tray seals?

Common causes include an incompatible sealant layer, contaminated tray flanges, warped trays, incorrect temperature, insufficient pressure, short dwell time, uneven sealing tools or excessive web tension. A controlled line trial is the best way to identify the cause.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

The listed MOQ is 500 kg. Typical production time is approximately 10–15 days after deposit, final specification approval and artwork approval where printing is required.
