Description

What Is BOPET/PE Top Sealing Film?

BOPET/PE top sealing film is a laminated lidding film used to close compatible food trays and containers on tray-sealing equipment. The BOPET outer layer provides clarity, stiffness, tensile strength, dimensional stability, and a printable surface, while the PE-based inner layer provides heat-seal performance.

HSQY manufactures and converts BOPET/PE lidding-film rolls in nominal thicknesses from 0.06mm to 0.10mm, with standard widths of 150mm, 230mm, and 280mm and custom widths available. Clear, printed, easy-peel, medium-peel, weld-seal, anti-fog, high-barrier, freezer-compatible, and application-specific heat-treatable grades can be developed.

Technical note: BOPET/PE is not a universal structure for every tray or thermal process. Seal compatibility depends on the tray flange, sealing layer, temperature, pressure, dwell time, equipment, food product, storage conditions, and heating cycle. Conventional-oven performance must be validated using the exact film and completed package.

How the BOPET/PE Laminate Works

Layer Primary Function Buyer Consideration
BOPET Outer Layer Provides tensile strength, clarity, stiffness, dimensional stability, and a printable surface. Confirm thickness, treatment, shrinkage, haze, gloss, and ink compatibility.
Printing Layer Carries branding, product information, instructions, barcodes, and traceability. Confirm surface or reverse printing, ink system, colors, repeat, and thermal process.
Laminating Adhesive Bonds the BOPET layer to the sealing or barrier structure. Confirm curing, bond strength, migration, and heat resistance.
Optional Barrier Layer Controls oxygen, moisture, aroma, or MAP gas transmission. Specify OTR, WVTR, gas mixture, food type, and shelf-life target.
PE-Based Sealant Layer Creates the heat seal and controls peel or weld-seal behavior. Must be compatible with the actual tray flange.

Available Top Sealing Film Grades

Film Grade Primary Function Typical Application
Clear Standard Film General transparent top sealing for compatible trays. Ready meals, bakery, deli, and food-service packs.
Easy-Peel Film Controlled opening with reduced tearing, shredding, or residue. Retail ready meals and consumer convenience packaging.
Weld-Seal Film Stronger permanent seal and enhanced tamper evidence. Liquid foods, heavy products, and demanding distribution.
Anti-Fog Film Reduces condensation and improves visibility in chilled display. Chilled meals, meat, produce, bakery, dairy, and salads.
High-Barrier Film Reduces oxygen or moisture transmission for MAP and extended shelf life. Meat, poultry, seafood, prepared meals, and oxygen-sensitive foods.
Printed Lidding Film Adds branding, instructions, product information, and traceability. Private-label and branded food-packaging programs.
Heat-Treatable Grade Developed for specified reheating, pasteurisation, microwave, or oven cycles. Requires validation with the exact tray, food, temperature, and heating time.

Tray Material Compatibility

The BOPET outer layer does not determine tray compatibility. The sealing layer must match the tray flange chemistry. Provide the tray supplier, resin, product code, drawing, or physical sample before commercial production.

Tray Material Compatibility Guidance Typical Use
CPET Primary application for this page. Use a CPET-compatible sealing layer and validate the heating cycle. Frozen, chilled, microwaveable, and selected ovenable ready meals.
APET / RPET / PET Requires a PET-compatible sealing layer; anti-fog is frequently requested for chilled display. Meat, produce, bakery, deli, desserts, and chilled meals.
PET/PE A PE-based sealant may bond to the PE-coated tray surface after testing. Chilled food and prepared-food packaging.
PP Standard BOPET/PE should not be assumed to seal every PP tray; a PP-compatible sealant may be required. Microwave meals, dairy, dips, and prepared foods.
Aluminium or Coated Paperboard Custom sealant chemistry may be required according to the rim coating and heating process. Ready meals, bakery, and specialist packaging.

Easy-Peel vs. Weld-Seal Performance

Seal Type Opening Behavior Typical Use
Easy Peel Opens with controlled force and reduced tearing or residue. Consumer convenience and retail ready meals.
Medium Peel Provides stronger distribution security while remaining peelable. Catering, prepared meals, and heavier products.
Weld Seal Creates a strong permanent bond that may tear the film or distort the rim when opened. Liquid-containing products and tamper-evident packaging.

Peel performance can change with sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, tray formulation, rim cleanliness, filling temperature, freezing, storage, and reheating. Establish the acceptable sealing window and peel-force test method during line trials.

Anti-Fog, High-Barrier, and MAP Options

Anti-fog treatment helps prevent condensation from obscuring the packaged food in refrigerated display. High-barrier structures may incorporate EVOH or another functional layer to control oxygen transmission and retain a modified atmosphere.

For barrier projects, provide the food type, expected shelf life, storage temperature, package gas mixture, required oxygen transmission rate, water-vapor transmission rate, and any pasteurisation or reheating process.

Temperature Resistance and Ovenability

The current page describes broad freezer, microwave, and oven performance. These capabilities should be stated only for an approved application-specific grade. A standard BOPET/PE laminate should not automatically be treated as a 220°C ovenable film.

For heat-treatment projects, specify the maximum temperature, duration, whether the lid remains on the tray, food load, venting requirements, freezer or chilled storage, ink and adhesive requirements, and relevant food-contact regulations. Validate the completed tray-and-film package before launch.

Tray-Sealing Machine and Roll Compatibility

Top sealing film must match the unwind system and tooling of the tray sealer. Provide the machine brand and model, web width, paper-core diameter, maximum roll diameter, roll weight, winding direction, seal-side orientation, eye-mark sensor, cutting layout, and operating speed.

Before mass production, test film tracking, tension, cutting accuracy, seal continuity, peel force, leakage, burst strength, wrinkling, print registration, anti-fog performance, MAP gas retention, freezer performance, and microwave or oven performance when applicable.

Quality-Control Requirements

  • Thickness profile: Affects roll build, stiffness, seal performance, and web tracking.

  • Bond strength: Confirms the BOPET and PE layers remain securely laminated.

  • Surface treatment: Controls ink and adhesive adhesion on the BOPET surface.

  • Coefficient of friction: Influences unwinding, web transport, and machine speed.

  • Heat shrinkage: Important during printing, lamination, sealing, and reheating.

  • Seal strength and peel force: Must remain within the agreed operating window.

  • Optical quality: Includes haze, gloss, gels, black spots, scratches, and contamination.

  • Roll quality: Includes edge alignment, telescoping, wrinkles, joints, core condition, and winding direction.
