Description

What Is Custom Thickness Food Tray Sealing Film?

Custom thickness food tray sealing film is flexible lidding rollstock manufactured or converted to a selected gauge, width, roll length, core, and functional structure for sealing compatible food trays and boxes. This page covers nominal thicknesses from 0.05mm to 0.10mm, equal to 50–100 microns.

HSQY supplies PET- or BOPET-based laminated films with application-specific sealing layers for CPET trays and other compatible tray surfaces. Available options include clear film, custom printing, easy peel, medium peel, weld seal, anti-fog, high barrier, MAP, freezer-compatible, microwave-compatible, and application-specific ovenable structures.

Increasing film thickness can improve stiffness, puncture resistance, web stability, and handling, but it also increases material use and may change sealing, cutting, peel, roll weight, and machine performance. The correct gauge should therefore be selected through testing rather than choosing the thickest film by default.

Why Customize the Lidding-Film Thickness?

  • Machine stability: The correct gauge can improve web tracking, tension control, cutting, and sealing on commercial tray sealers.

  • Puncture resistance: A heavier gauge may be useful for products with sharp edges, bones, frozen components, or demanding distribution.

  • Package stiffness: Thicker film can provide a more substantial feel and reduce excessive flutter or curling.

  • Peel performance: Gauge influences how the film bends, tears, and peels from the tray rim.

  • Thermal behavior: Thickness can affect heat transfer, shrinkage, sealing response, and reheating performance.

  • Barrier design: The total gauge may change when EVOH, PA, coatings, or other functional layers are added.

  • Material optimization: The lowest gauge that consistently meets protection and line-performance requirements can reduce material consumption and roll changes.

50–100 Micron Thickness Selection Guide

The following guidance explains typical engineering trade-offs. It is not a universal recommendation. Final suitability must be confirmed on the actual tray, sealing equipment, and packaged product.

Nominal Thickness Potential Benefit Validation Required
50 Microns / 0.05mm Lower material weight and more metres per roll for a given roll diameter. Suitable only when seal strength, puncture resistance, stiffness, and machine handling are verified.
60 Microns / 0.06mm Balanced gauge commonly considered for general tray-sealing applications. Validate the exact tray, peel requirement, food load, and thermal cycle.
70–80 Microns / 0.07–0.08mm Higher stiffness and puncture resistance than lighter gauges. May suit heavier products, longer distribution, or wider webs after line testing.
90–100 Microns / 0.09–0.10mm Maximum gauge range currently listed for this product page. Check roll weight, machine limits, heat transfer, cutting, seal window, and material efficiency.

Food Tray Sealing Film Data Sheets

Retain these technical-document links on the page. Before publication, confirm that each PDF opens correctly and contains current, product-specific data rather than generic company information.

How the Multilayer Film Structure Works

Layer Primary Function Buyer Consideration
PET / BOPET Outer Layer Provides strength, clarity, stiffness, dimensional stability, and printability. Confirm gauge, treatment, shrinkage, haze, gloss, and thermal requirements.
Printing Layer Carries branding, instructions, product information, and traceability. Confirm surface or reverse printing, ink system, colors, repeat, and heating process.
Laminating Adhesive Bonds the outer layer to the sealing or barrier layers. Confirm bond strength, curing, migration, and heat resistance.
Optional Barrier Layer Controls oxygen, moisture, aroma, or MAP gas transmission. Specify OTR, WVTR, food type, gas mixture, and shelf-life target.
Application-Specific Sealant Creates the seal and controls easy-peel, medium-peel, or weld-seal behavior. Must match the actual tray flange chemistry.

Tray Material Compatibility

Film thickness does not determine which tray resin it will seal. Compatibility is controlled mainly by the sealing layer, tray flange, and process conditions. Test the exact tray before commercial orders.

Tray Material Compatibility Guidance Typical Application
CPET Primary application for this page. Use a compatible sealant and validate the complete heating cycle. Frozen, chilled, microwaveable, and selected ovenable ready meals.
APET / RPET / PET Requires a PET-compatible sealing layer; anti-fog is often requested for chilled display. Meat, produce, bakery, deli, desserts, and chilled meals.
PET/PE A PE-based sealant may seal to a PE-coated tray flange after testing. Chilled food and general prepared-food packaging.
PP A PP-compatible sealant may be required; standard BOPET/PE should not be assumed to seal every PP tray. Microwave meals, dairy, dips, and prepared foods.
Aluminium or Coated Paperboard A custom sealant may be required according to the rim coating and heating process. Ready meals, bakery, and specialist food packaging.

Easy-Peel, Medium-Peel, and Weld-Seal Options

Seal Type Opening Behavior Typical Application
Easy Peel Controlled opening with reduced tearing, shredding, and residue. Retail ready meals and convenience packaging.
Medium Peel Balances consumer opening with higher distribution security. Prepared meals, catering, and heavier food products.
Weld Seal Creates a stronger permanent bond and increased tamper evidence. Liquid-containing foods and demanding transport.

Seal and peel performance may change when film gauge changes. Each proposed thickness should be tested for seal initiation, operating window, peak peel force, clean-peel behavior, leakage, and tray-rim damage.

Anti-Fog, High-Barrier, and MAP Structures

Anti-fog treatment helps reduce condensation and improve visibility in refrigerated display. High-barrier grades can incorporate EVOH or another functional layer to control oxygen and maintain a modified atmosphere.

For barrier projects, provide the required OTR, WVTR, gas mixture, food type, filling temperature, storage temperature, and target shelf life. The barrier performance should be measured on the approved complete laminate, not inferred from thickness alone.

Freezer, Microwave, and Oven Applications

The current page states a range from −40°C to 220°C. Such a claim should apply only to a validated application-specific grade. The thermal suitability of a CPET tray does not automatically apply to the lidding film, ink, adhesive, coating, or seal.

For thermal applications, provide the lowest storage temperature, maximum heating temperature, duration, food load, venting requirement, whether the lid remains on during cooking, and the relevant food-contact rules. Conduct completed-pack tests before launch.

Effect of Thickness on Tray-Sealer Performance

  • Roll weight: Thicker film increases roll weight for the same width and length.

  • Metres per roll: A thicker gauge may reduce the available length within the machine’s maximum roll diameter.

  • Heat transfer: Gauge can change sealing response and the required temperature, pressure, or dwell time.

  • Cutting: Heavier film may require different knife condition, cutting pressure, or tooling maintenance.

  • Web tension: Tension settings may need adjustment to prevent wrinkling, stretching, or poor tracking.

  • Peel behavior: A thicker film may feel stiffer and may change the angle or force required to open the package.

  • Line speed: Verify stable operation at the planned commercial speed, not only during slow sample trials.

Gauge Optimization and Sustainability

A thicker film is not automatically a better film. Gauge optimization aims to use the lowest thickness that consistently meets puncture, barrier, sealing, peel, distribution, and machine-performance requirements. This may reduce material weight, roll changes, transport weight, and packaging cost.

Any recyclability claim should be assessed for the complete tray-and-film system, including resins, adhesives, inks, coatings, labels, local collection rules, and actual recycling infrastructure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is custom thickness food tray sealing film?

It is lidding-film rollstock manufactured or converted to a selected nominal gauge, width, roll configuration, sealing layer, and functional structure for a specific tray and packaging process.

Which thicknesses are available?

This page covers nominal thicknesses from 0.05mm to 0.10mm, equal to 50–100 microns. Final tolerances should be confirmed in the approved technical specification.

Is thicker sealing film always better?

No. Thicker film may improve stiffness and puncture resistance, but it also increases material use, roll weight, and heat-transfer requirements. The optimum gauge is the lowest thickness that passes all package and line tests.

How does thickness affect tray-sealer performance?

Thickness can affect roll weight, metres per roll, web tension, heat transfer, cutting, tracking, seal window, peel force, and maximum production speed.

Can one film thickness seal every tray material?

No. Tray compatibility depends mainly on the sealing layer and tray flange chemistry. CPET, APET, PET/PE, PP, aluminium, and paperboard may require different structures.

Is easy-peel custom thickness film available?

Yes. Easy-peel, medium-peel, and weld-seal structures can be evaluated at different gauges. Each proposed thickness should be tested on the actual tray.

Can anti-fog be added?

Yes. Anti-fog treatment can be added for refrigerated and moisture-rich foods where condensation may reduce product visibility.

Can high-barrier film be supplied for MAP?

Yes. High-barrier structures can be evaluated for MAP. Provide the required OTR, WVTR, gas mixture, food type, storage temperature, and shelf-life target.

Can standard BOPET/PE film be used from −40°C to 220°C?

A universal temperature claim should not be applied to every structure. The exact film, tray, seal, food load, storage condition, and heating cycle must be tested together.

Can the film be custom printed?

Yes. Flexographic or gravure printing can be evaluated for logos, product information, cooking instructions, barcodes, QR codes, and traceability.

Which roll dimensions can be customized?

Thickness, width, length, core ID, core length, roll weight, maximum outer diameter, seal-side orientation, and winding direction can be customized subject to feasibility.

What causes thick lidding film to wrinkle or track poorly?

Possible causes include incorrect tension, unsuitable roll build, damaged edges, excessive roll weight, core misalignment, thickness variation, poor unwind control, or incorrect machine settings.

What is the minimum order quantity?

The currently listed MOQ is 500kg. Trial quantities depend on stock, structure, gauge, width, printing, and conversion requirements.

How long is the production lead time?

Typical lead time is approximately 10–14 days after deposit and final specification approval. Printed, high-barrier, or special thermal grades may require additional time.
