Description

What Is 60 Micron Easy-Peel Lidding Film?

60 micron easy-peel lidding film is a clear PET- or BOPET-based tray sealing film designed to create a secure but consumer-friendly seal on compatible CPET food trays. The nominal thickness is 0.06mm, equal to 60 microns. A PET outer layer provides clarity, strength, dimensional stability, and printability, while the application-specific sealing layer controls adhesion and peel behavior.

Unlike a weld-seal film that forms a stronger permanent bond, easy-peel film is engineered to open with controlled force and reduced tearing, shredding, or residue on the tray rim. It is suitable for ready meals, frozen foods, airline catering, institutional meals, bakery products, and other tray-packed foods where both seal integrity and opening convenience matter.

The exact film structure must be matched to the tray flange and tested on the production line. Seal performance depends on the actual CPET tray, food product, sealing machine, temperature, pressure, dwell time, storage conditions, and heating cycle. Standard PET/PE film should not automatically be described as compatible with every CPET, APET, PET, PP, freezer, microwave, or conventional-oven application.

  • Reduced shredding and residue: A properly matched film can open cleanly without excessive tearing or leaving film on the flange.

  • Secure distribution seal: Maintains package integrity when sealing parameters and tray compatibility are correctly controlled.

  • Clear product visibility: High transparency supports attractive retail presentation.

  • Optional anti-fog treatment: Helps reduce condensation in refrigerated display.

  • Optional high barrier: EVOH or another barrier structure can be considered for MAP and extended-shelf-life products.

  • Custom printing: Supports branding, product information, preparation instructions, and traceability.

  • Custom roll conversion: Width, length, core, winding direction, and maximum roll diameter can be matched to the tray sealer.

Easy-Peel Film vs. Weld-Seal Film

Seal Type Opening Behavior Main Advantage Typical Use
Easy Peel Peels with controlled force and reduced tearing or residue Best consumer opening experience Retail ready meals, desserts, chilled meals, and convenience packs
Medium Peel Requires greater opening force than easy peel Balances convenience and distribution security Prepared meals, catering, and heavier products
Weld Seal Creates a strong permanent bond and may tear film or distort the rim Maximum tamper evidence and seal strength Liquid meals, heavy products, and high-abuse distribution

What Determines Clean Peel Performance?

  • Tray flange chemistry: CPET formulations and rim surfaces can differ between tray manufacturers.

  • Sealant formulation: The sealing layer controls adhesion, peel force, and failure mode.

  • Sealing temperature: Excessive heat can increase seal strength, distort the film, or cause shrinkage; insufficient heat can cause incomplete seals.

  • Dwell time and pressure: Both must be sufficient and evenly distributed across the tray flange.

  • Flange cleanliness: Oil, sauce, water, crumbs, and product contamination can weaken or interrupt the seal.

  • Storage and heating cycle: Freezing, refrigeration, microwave heating, and oven heating can change peel performance.

  • Peel direction and test speed: Peel-force results depend on how the test is performed, so the method must be agreed.

Tray Material Compatibility

Tray Material Compatibility Guidance Typical Application
CPET Primary application for this product. Use a CPET-compatible easy-peel sealant and validate the heating cycle. Ready meals, frozen meals, airline and institutional catering
APET / RPET / PET Requires a PET-compatible sealant. Anti-fog is commonly requested for chilled retail packs. Produce, meat, bakery, deli, desserts, and chilled meals
PET/PE A PE-based sealant may seal to a PE-coated flange after compatibility testing. Chilled foods and general prepared-food packaging
PP Do not assume the CPET easy-peel grade will seal PP. A PP-compatible sealant may be required. Microwave meals, dairy, dips, and prepared foods
Aluminium or Coated Paperboard Custom sealant structures may be required according to the rim coating and thermal process. Ready meals, bakery, and specialty packaging

Optional Anti-Fog and High-Barrier Grades

Anti-fog treatment helps reduce condensation on the inside of the film and improves visibility in chilled cabinets. It is particularly useful for high-moisture foods, chilled ready meals, fresh produce, meat, bakery products, dairy, and prepared salads.

High-barrier versions can include EVOH or another functional barrier layer for modified atmosphere packaging. Buyers should provide the required oxygen transmission rate, water-vapor transmission rate, gas mixture, shelf-life target, storage temperature, and food type so the structure can be evaluated.

Typical Applications

  • CPET ready-meal trays for chilled, frozen, microwave, or oven programs

  • Airline, railway, hospital, school, and institutional catering meals

  • Frozen pasta, rice, meat, vegetable, and multi-compartment meals

  • Bakery products, desserts, prepared salads, deli foods, and snack trays

  • Modified atmosphere packaging for shelf-life-sensitive products

  • Private-label food packaging requiring custom printed lidding film

Sealing Conditions and Production-Line Testing

Good seals depend on sealing equipment, temperature, pressure, dwell time, film tension, tray rigidity, flange cleanliness, tooling condition, and machine speed. Too much heat can cause shrinkage or excessive adhesion, while insufficient heat can create incomplete seals. Uneven pressure or short dwell time can also cause leakage and inconsistent peel.

Before mass production, test film tracking, seal continuity, peel force, peel consistency, leakage, burst strength, opening residue, tray-rim damage, anti-fog performance, freezer performance, MAP gas retention, microwave performance, and oven performance when applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is easy-peel lidding film?

Easy-peel lidding film is designed to maintain a secure tray seal while allowing consumers to remove the film with controlled force. A properly matched grade should reduce tearing, shredding, and residue on the tray flange.

Is 0.06mm the same as 60 microns?

Yes. One millimetre equals 1,000 microns, so 0.06mm equals 60 microns. The production tolerance should be stated in the approved specification.

Is this film designed for CPET ready-meal trays?

Yes. This page is positioned for compatible CPET food trays. Provide the tray product code, supplier, drawing, or physical sample so the sealant and peel performance can be confirmed.

What is the difference between easy peel and weld seal?

Easy-peel film prioritizes convenient opening with controlled force. Weld-seal film creates a stronger permanent bond and may provide greater tamper evidence, but it can be more difficult to open and may tear or distort the tray rim.

Can easy-peel film seal APET, RPET, PET/PE, or PP trays?

Different tray resins may require different sealing layers. A film developed for CPET should not automatically be used for PP or another tray material. Send the actual tray so compatibility can be evaluated.

Can standard PET/PE film be used at 220°C?

It should not be assumed that every PET/PE laminate is suitable for 220°C. Conventional-oven use requires an application-specific ovenable structure validated with the exact film, CPET tray, food, temperature, time, and cooking method.

Is anti-fog easy-peel film available?

Yes. Anti-fog treatment can be supplied for chilled meals, fresh produce, meat, bakery, dairy, and other moist products where condensation may reduce product visibility.

Can HSQY supply high-barrier film for MAP trays?

High-barrier structures can be evaluated for modified atmosphere packaging. Provide the target OTR, WVTR, gas mixture, storage temperature, food type, and shelf-life requirement.

Why does easy-peel film sometimes open too easily or too tightly?

Peel force can change because of tray formulation, sealant selection, sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, contamination, storage conditions, freezing, heating, or inconsistent tooling. A controlled line trial is required to establish the correct window.

Can the film be custom printed?

Yes. Custom printing can include logos, graphics, preparation instructions, product information, traceability content, and date-code areas. Provide the artwork, colors, print repeat, width, and annual volume.

Can roll width, length, core, and winding direction be customized?

Yes. Provide the required width, roll length, core ID, core length, maximum outer diameter, roll weight, seal-side orientation, winding direction, and tray-sealing machine model.

What is the MOQ and lead time?

The currently stated MOQ is 500kg. Typical lead time is approximately 10–14 working days after deposit and final specification approval. Printed, high-barrier, anti-fog, or special peel grades may require additional time.

Can I request a sample before placing a bulk order?

Yes, subject to stock and specification. Send the tray sample, tray material, dimensions, sealing-machine model, required width, peel target, food application, storage conditions, and heating process.

How should easy-peel lidding film rolls be stored?

Store the rolls in their original protective packaging in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, dust, solvents, and strong odors. Allow cold-stored rolls to acclimatize before opening to reduce condensation.
