Frosted PP Sheet Video

Watch the video below to review HSQY polypropylene sheets, available surfaces and converting applications.

What Is a 0.4mm Frosted PP Sheet?

A 0.4mm frosted PP sheet is a thin, semi-rigid polypropylene sheet with a nominal thickness of 400 microns and a matte or textured surface.

The surface texture scatters reflected light and creates a softer visual appearance than a high-gloss PP surface.

Depending on pigment concentration and sheet construction, the material can be translucent, transparent colored or completely opaque.

At 0.4mm, PP is normally flexible enough for creasing and folding while retaining sufficient stiffness for folders, box panels, dividers, covers and templates.

Polypropylene has low density, low moisture absorption and resistance to many dilute acids, alkalis and cleaning chemicals. Chemical compatibility must still be confirmed for the exact chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure time.

Thin PP Sheet vs. Industrial PP Board

Product Type Main Characteristics Typical Applications
0.25-0.8mm Thin PP Sheet Flexible to semi-rigid, lightweight and suitable for printing, folding and die cutting Folders, packaging boxes, notebook covers, tags, dividers and placemats
1-2mm Medium PP Sheet Greater stiffness, body and impact resistance Templates, protective panels, signs, separators and formed components
3-5mm Solid PP Board Rigid industrial sheet requiring different fabrication and tolerance controls Industrial liners, machine parts, fabricated tanks and chemical equipment
Corrugated PP Sheet Twin-wall or fluted lightweight construction Reusable boxes, signs, layer pads, partitions and logistics packaging

The featured product is a solid thin PP sheet and should not be confused with corrugated polypropylene board or thick industrial PP-H plate.

Light-transmission and haze values should be measured when the sheet is intended for lampshades, lightboxes, photography backgrounds or optical diffusion.

Corona-Treated PP Sheet for Printing

Untreated polypropylene has a relatively low surface energy, which can reduce ink, coating and adhesive adhesion.

Corona treatment modifies the PP surface and can improve wetting and adhesion for printing, coating and bonding.

Customers should specify whether one side or both sides require treatment and identify the printing side on the packaging label.

Corona treatment can decline during storage. Surface energy should be checked before printing, especially after extended storage or exposure to heat, moisture, dust or handling contamination.

Printing Method Typical Products Required Checks
UV Offset Printing File folders, folding boxes, covers and advertising sheets Surface energy, feeding, static, ink adhesion, curing and crease resistance
Screen Printing Signs, panels, folders, templates and promotional products Ink compatibility, drying, abrasion resistance and flexibility
UV Inkjet Printing Short-run signs, displays and customized graphics Curing energy, ink adhesion, sheet distortion and scratch resistance
Flexographic Printing Roll-fed packaging, labels and repeated patterns Treatment level, ink system, drying and winding conditions
Digital Printing Personalized folders, covers and short-run packaging Printer compatibility, primer requirement and post-print folding

Folding, Creasing and Living-Hinge Performance

Thin polypropylene sheets can be creased and repeatedly folded, making them useful for folders, boxes, notebook covers and hinged stationery products.

Fold performance depends on resin grade, thickness, grain direction, crease depth, crease width, folding radius, temperature and pigmentation.

  • Confirm the machine direction and transverse direction before designing a repeated hinge.

  • Use controlled creasing to avoid excessive thinning or cutting through the sheet.

  • Test printed ink after repeated folding to check cracking and delamination.

  • Validate cold-temperature folding when products will be stored or transported in winter conditions.

  • Test colored, mineral-filled and flame-retardant grades separately because additives can change hinge performance.

Cutting, Punching and Joining Methods

  • Use sharp guillotines, rotary cutters, steel-rule dies, punches or knives.

  • Control sheet temperature and tool clearance to reduce burrs and distorted edges.

  • Use suitable scoring tools for folding-box and folder production.

  • Ultrasonic joining can be evaluated for compatible PP-to-PP components.

  • Heat sealing and hot-plate welding require controlled temperature, pressure and dwell time.

  • Standard PP is generally unsuitable for conventional RF or high-frequency dielectric welding.

  • Adhesive bonding normally requires surface treatment, primer or an adhesive designed for low-surface-energy plastics.

  • Mechanical methods include stitching, riveting, eyelets, clips and snap-fit assembly.

Packaging and Printing Application

Colored frosted polypropylene sheet used for signs folders and displays

Signage and Stationery Application

Food-Contact PP Sheet Requirements

Polypropylene can be used in food-contact applications when the exact resin, additives, pigments and processing aids are authorized for the intended use.

Standard colored, printed, conductive, flame-retardant or recycled-content PP sheet should not automatically be described as food-contact compliant.

Buyers should specify the food type, contact temperature, contact duration, filling process, storage conditions and destination-market regulation.

Food-contact documentation may include resin compliance information, a declaration of compliance, overall migration testing and specific migration testing where applicable.

Printed food packaging also requires suitable inks, coatings and adhesives, with appropriate separation from food where required.

Anti-Static, Conductive and ESD PP Grades

Grade Main Function Required Specification
Standard PP General electrical insulation and stationery use Mechanical, color, thickness and printing requirements
Temporary Anti-Static PP Reduces static buildup and dust attraction for a limited period Surface resistance, humidity, temperature and effective duration
Permanent Anti-Static PP Provides more stable static-control performance Resistance range, test standard, voltage and aging requirements
Static-Dissipative PP Controls electrostatic charge for sensitive electronic components Surface and volume resistance, charge-decay time and grounding design
Conductive PP Provides a conductive path when correctly grounded Conductivity, grounding, filler, color and mechanical performance

Flame-Retardant PP Sheet

Standard polypropylene is combustible and should not be described as fireproof.

Flame-retardant formulations can be developed for applications requiring a defined burning classification.

The customer should specify the required standard, classification, thickness, color, specimen orientation and end-use environment.

A test result for one thickness or color should not automatically be applied to another formulation.

Material-level flammability results do not establish the fire rating of a complete sign, package, electrical device, furniture product or building system.

UV-Stabilized PP Sheet for Outdoor Use

Standard polypropylene sheet is mainly recommended for indoor printing, packaging and stationery applications.

Prolonged sunlight exposure may cause fading, chalking, embrittlement, loss of impact resistance and dimensional change.

Outdoor signs, panels and decorative sheets require an application-specific UV-stabilized formulation.

Outdoor requirements should identify the color, climate, exposure direction, service period, color-change limit, mechanical-property retention and weathering-test method.

Recycling and Sustainability

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic material that can be mechanically recycled where suitable collection, sorting and processing systems are available.

A finished product should not be described as universally recyclable based only on its PP base material.

Pigments, printing inks, labels, adhesives, coatings, metal fasteners, flame retardants and conductive fillers can affect sorting and recycling.

Recycled-content PP options can be evaluated according to color, odor, contamination, mechanical properties and regulatory requirements.

Food-contact use of recycled PP requires separately validated feedstock, recycling processes and applicable documentation.

Recommended Quality-Control Tests

  • PP resin or compound verification.

  • Virgin or recycled-content percentage.

  • Thickness and thickness tolerance.

  • Sheet length, width, diagonal and squareness.

Is 0.4mm equal to 400 microns?

Yes. A 0.4mm polypropylene sheet is equal to 400 microns.

Is 0.4mm PP sheet flexible or rigid?

It is generally semi-rigid. It can bend and fold while retaining sufficient body for folders, covers, boxes and dividers.

What is the difference between frosted and glossy PP sheet?

Frosted PP has a textured, lower-glare surface, while glossy PP has a smoother surface with stronger reflection and higher apparent shine.

Is frosted PP sheet transparent?

Natural frosted PP is normally translucent rather than optically transparent. Transparency depends on the resin, thickness, pigment and surface texture.

Does frosted PP diffuse light?

The textured surface can create a diffuse visual effect, but applications requiring defined optical performance should specify light transmission and haze.

Can frosted PP sheet be printed?

Yes. Printing-grade PP should normally receive corona treatment, flame treatment or a compatible primer to improve ink adhesion.

What printing methods can be used?

Suitable sheets can be UV offset printed, screen printed, UV inkjet printed, flexographically printed or digitally printed after testing.

What is corona-treated PP sheet?

It is polypropylene whose surface has been electrically treated to increase surface energy and improve ink, coating or adhesive wetting.

Does corona treatment last permanently?

No. The treatment level can decrease over time, so the surface should be tested before printing after extended storage.

Can the PP sheet be folded repeatedly?

A suitable PP grade can provide repeated-fold performance, but the resin, sheet direction, crease geometry and additives must be tested.

Can 0.4mm PP sheet be die cut?

Yes. It can be die cut, punched, slit and guillotine cut using suitable tooling and clearance.

Can PP sheet be RF welded?

Standard PP is generally unsuitable for conventional RF welding because it does not respond effectively to dielectric heating. Heat sealing or ultrasonic joining should be evaluated instead.

Can polypropylene sheet be ultrasonically welded?

Compatible PP-to-PP components can be ultrasonically joined, but semi-crystalline PP requires appropriate joint design and machine settings.

Is every PP sheet food safe?

No. Food-contact suitability depends on the exact resin, pigments, additives, coatings, inks and intended conditions of use.

Does an SGS or RoHS report prove food-contact compliance?

Only a report covering the relevant food-contact regulation, formulation, food simulants and use conditions can support the applicable claim.

Is medical-grade PP available?

Specialized medical grades can be evaluated after the resin, additives, cleanliness, traceability, sterilization and regulatory requirements are specified.

Is anti-static PP sheet available?

Yes. Temporary or permanent anti-static grades can be developed according to the required resistance range and effective duration.

Is conductive PP sheet available?

Conductive PP grades are available for selected ESD and industrial applications, subject to resistance, grounding, color and mechanical requirements.

Is polypropylene sheet fireproof?

No. Standard PP is combustible. Flame-retardant grades require a specific formulation and test report for the applicable thickness and standard.

Is standard frosted PP suitable outdoors?

Standard PP is mainly intended for indoor use. Long-term outdoor applications require a UV-stabilized grade and weathering validation.

Is frosted PP sheet recyclable?

PP can be recyclable where suitable collection and processing systems exist. Inks, labels, coatings, fillers and attached components can affect compatibility.

What colors can be customized?

Natural, white, black, transparent colors and opaque colors can be matched using a Pantone reference or approved physical sample.

What sheet sizes are available?

Common sizes include 915 × 1830mm, 1220 × 2440mm and 1560 × 3050mm, with A4, A3 and customized cut sizes also available.

Is 2050 × 3050mm available?

This extra-wide size must be confirmed because availability depends on the production line, thickness, surface and actual effective width.

Can I obtain a sample?

Existing A4 samples, color swatches and printing samples may be available. Customized colors and functional grades may require trial production.

What is the production lead time?

Standard production generally requires approximately 7-10 days after the specification, sample, payment and packing are confirmed.

What information is required for a quotation?

Provide the thickness, dimensions, color, surface, printing treatment, converting process, functional grade, quantity, packing and destination.
