PETG is a glycol-modified copolyester developed to provide a useful combination of transparency, toughness, formability and fabrication performance.
Compared with conventional PET structures, the glycol modification changes the crystallization behavior of the polymer and makes PETG particularly useful for thermoforming, heat bending and fabrication into detailed transparent components.
For building-related applications, PETG is most appropriate where transparent non-structural panels, covers, displays, partitions or formed components are required. Structural glazing, load-bearing panels and safety glazing require separate engineering and applicable certification.
PETG can be evaluated for interior glazing applications such as transparent partitions, display windows, machine or equipment covers, vending machine panels and other supported transparent components.
For glazing-style applications, buyers should specify finished panel dimensions, thickness, support method, mounting points, expected impact conditions and whether the sheet will be flat, bent or thermoformed.
This product should not automatically be treated as certified safety glazing or structural glazing. Projects subject to building codes, impact classifications or safety-glazing regulations require separate grade selection, testing and certification.
Clear PETG can be used in supported interior partition systems where transparency, lightweight construction and fabrication capability are desired.
Partition designers should consider panel dimensions, thickness, edge support, fastener spacing, thermal movement and cleaning requirements. Large unsupported spans may require greater thickness or a supporting frame.
Transparent PETG can be fabricated into display windows, covers and selected panels for vending machines and other retail equipment.
The sheet can be cut, drilled, formed and decorated using processes suitable for the selected PETG grade. Buyers should specify the required dimensions, panel thickness, mounting method and expected cleaning or impact conditions.
PETG is well suited to retail display components, product holders, transparent covers, point-of-purchase fixtures, shelving accessories and other shop-fitting applications where clear appearance and fabrication flexibility are important.
Display manufacturers should provide finished dimensions, support positions, bending requirements, printing, bonding and expected loading so the appropriate thickness can be reviewed.
Clear or customized PETG can be evaluated for furniture inserts, decorative panels, transparent covers, display furniture and other fabricated interior components.
Where a component supports weight, buyers should provide dimensions, load, support spacing and attachment method. Material thickness should be selected from the actual design rather than from appearance alone.
PETG can be thermoformed into selected decorative lamp covers, transparent or colored lighting components and interior display features.
Lighting projects should specify operating temperature, distance from the light source, required transparency or diffusion, forming geometry and any applicable electrical or fire-performance requirements.
Suitable PETG grades can be thermoformed into detailed three-dimensional components for displays, covers, interior architectural features and other fabricated products.
PETG is particularly useful where mold detail and complex geometry are important. During forming, however, the starting sheet stretches and local wall thickness can decrease significantly.
Provide mold dimensions, maximum draw depth, corner radii, draft angle and minimum finished wall thickness when selecting sheet gauge for a thermoformed component.
Clear PETG can be evaluated for vacuum forming into covers, housings, display structures, lamp components, protective panels and other three-dimensional parts.
Forming trials should evaluate heating uniformity, sheet sag, corner thinning, mold definition, dimensional shrinkage and finished optical quality before full production.
Some PETG sheet grades can be thermoformed without a separate pre-drying step when material storage and moisture conditions are properly controlled.
Pre-drying requirements still depend on the actual PETG grade, storage environment, sheet condition, processing temperature and forming equipment. Follow the processing guidance provided for the supplied material and validate it on the intended production line.
| Process | General Use | Buyer Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Thermoforming | Detailed 3D parts, covers and interior features | Draw depth, wall distribution and mold geometry |
| Vacuum Forming | Covers, housings and display components | Heating profile, sag and finished thickness |
| Sawing / Cutting | Flat fabricated panels and cut components | Tooling, edge quality and dimensional tolerance |
| Drilling | Mounting holes and assembly features | Hole diameter, edge distance and mechanical loading |
| Die Cutting | Repeated shapes and converted components | Thickness, tool geometry and edge quality |
| Heat Bending | Display fixtures, angles and fabricated structures | Bend radius, heating conditions and final geometry |
| Bonding | Assemblies and fabricated display components | Adhesive compatibility, joint design and surface preparation |
PETG can be used for indoor signs, illuminated display components, graphic panels, point-of-sale displays and other printed applications when the ink system is compatible with the sheet surface.
Potential processes include digital printing, screen printing and other compatible decorative methods. Ink adhesion, curing and any subsequent forming process should be tested using the actual production sheet.
PETG is commonly chosen where useful impact resistance and resistance to chipping or cracking during fabrication are required together with transparency.
Impact performance depends on the exact PETG grade, sheet thickness, temperature, support method and test standard. Buyers with defined impact requirements should request technical data for the exact supplied material rather than relying on a generic comparison with acrylic or other plastics.
PETG can provide useful resistance to many substances encountered in commercial, interior and general fabrication environments.
Chemical compatibility is not universal. For applications involving cleaners, solvents or other chemicals, provide the exact chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure duration and applied stress for material evaluation.
Standard clear PETG should not automatically be assumed suitable for long-term outdoor exposure.
| Grade Direction | Typical Use | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Standard PETG | Interior glazing, displays, partitions, furniture and indoor signage | Thickness, forming, cleaning and fabrication requirements |
| UV-Resistant PETG | Applications where defined sunlight or outdoor exposure is expected | UV grade, protected side, service period, climate and clarity retention |
If the finished component will be installed outdoors or near substantial sunlight exposure, state this in the quotation request so the appropriate grade can be reviewed.
PETG is a thermoplastic and changes dimension as temperature changes. Panel installations should therefore account for thermal expansion and contraction.
For framed panels, partitions, covers or glazing-style installations, mounting holes, channels and edge clearances should be designed so the sheet can move without excessive constraint.
Provide the expected installation temperature range, panel dimensions and fastening method when dimensional movement is important to the finished assembly.
| Material | General Strength | Typical Selection Direction |
|---|---|---|
| PETG | Good balance of transparency, toughness, thermoforming and fabrication | Interior glazing, displays, partitions, formed parts and shop fittings |
| Acrylic / PMMA | Excellent optical appearance and surface finish with established outdoor grades | Premium displays, signage, glazing and decorative panels |
| Polycarbonate / PC | Selected where higher impact and engineering performance are required | Machine guards, protective glazing, equipment covers and impact-critical applications |
The appropriate material depends on impact requirements, outdoor exposure, temperature, surface hardness, forming, fabrication, applicable standards and total project cost. No single transparent plastic is the best choice for every application.
| Thickness Direction | General Application Direction | Selection Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 0.15–0.5mm | Thin formed parts, laminated structures and lightweight converted components | Flexibility, feeding, forming and finished rigidity |
| 0.5–1.5mm | Lighting parts, display inserts, thin covers and thermoformed components | Support, forming depth and handling |
| 2–4mm | Displays, partitions, vending panels and more rigid fabricated components | Panel dimensions, span, support and mounting |
| 5–7mm | Thicker fabricated panels and supported glazing-style components requiring greater starting-sheet rigidity | Impact requirement, frame design, load, installation and fabrication process |
These ranges are general selection directions and are not structural ratings. Final thickness should be selected according to the finished panel dimensions, support, loading, impact requirement and applicable project standards.
| Format | Typical Direction | What to Specify |
|---|---|---|
| PETG Roll | Thin-gauge converting, automated forming and continuous processing | Thickness, width, core dimensions, roll diameter and roll weight |
| PETG Sheet | Interior glazing, partitions, displays, furniture, signage and cut-sheet fabrication | Thickness, dimensions, flatness, optical requirements and fabrication method |
