Heat Resistant Polypropylene Sheet

High-Temperature-Resistant PP Sheet Roll for Thermoforming

HSQY high-temperature-resistant PP sheet roll is a specially formulated polypropylene material developed for thermoforming, hot-fill packaging, microwaveable containers, industrial liners and fabricated components exposed to elevated temperatures. Heat-stabilizing additives can improve thermal aging resistance and help the material retain useful mechanical properties longer than a standard general-purpose PP grade.

The reference thickness range is 0.125mm to 3mm, with customized widths up to approximately 1830mm and sheet or roll supply available according to the selected gauge. The reference temperature range is −30°C to +130°C, but the upper value must be treated as a grade-, time-, load- and application-dependent limit rather than an unconditional continuous-use rating.

Buyers should specify the required continuous operating temperature, short-term peak temperature, exposure duration, chemical environment, mechanical load, forming process, food-contact requirements and dimensional tolerance. HSQY can then recommend a suitable PP homopolymer, copolymer or heat-stabilized formulation and provide samples for application testing.

What Is High-Temperature-Resistant Polypropylene Sheet?

High-temperature-resistant PP sheet is polypropylene modified or selected to retain useful properties for longer periods at elevated temperatures. The formulation may use a higher-rigidity homopolymer, nucleating agents, antioxidants, heat stabilizers, mineral fillers or other additives depending on the required process and end use.

The material remains a thermoplastic and will gradually lose stiffness as temperature increases. A heat-stabilized PP grade improves resistance to thermal oxidation and long-term aging, but it does not convert polypropylene into an unlimited high-temperature engineering plastic.

Continuous Temperature vs Short-Term Peak Temperature

Continuous operating temperature is the temperature at which a material is expected to function for an extended period under defined load and environmental conditions. Short-term temperature is a temporary peak that the material may tolerate for seconds, minutes or a limited processing cycle.

Temperature Term Meaning What the Buyer Should Specify
Continuous Service Temperature Long-duration operating condition under mechanical load and environmental exposure Temperature, total service life, load, support spacing, chemical contact and safety factor
Short-Term Peak Temperature Temporary exposure during forming, sterilization, hot filling, heating or process upset Maximum temperature, duration, number of cycles and whether the part carries load
Heat Deflection Temperature Laboratory indication of deformation under a specified load and test method Required HDT method, applied stress and minimum value
Vicat Softening Temperature Test temperature at which a defined indenter penetrates the material under a specified load Required test method and whether Vicat is relevant to the actual design
Melting Temperature Temperature range where crystalline PP melts; not a usable operating-temperature rating Processing temperature and thermal history rather than finished-part service temperature

A statement such as “resistant to 130°C” is incomplete without exposure time and load. For critical applications, the purchase specification should include both the required long-term operating condition and the maximum short-term cycle.

Standard PP vs Heat-Stabilized PP Sheet

Comparison Standard PP Sheet Heat-Stabilized PP Sheet
Primary Purpose General packaging, fabrication and moderate-temperature applications Improved retention of properties during extended or repeated elevated-temperature exposure
Thermal Aging Standard antioxidant package and normal service life Enhanced antioxidant or stabilizer system designed to slow thermal oxidation
High-Temperature Rigidity Decreases as temperature and load increase Can be improved through resin selection, nucleation or reinforcement, subject to grade
Typical Use Standard trays, folders, packaging and room-temperature industrial parts Hot-fill packs, microwaveable containers, heated process liners and repeated warm-service parts
Qualification Standard product data may be sufficient for noncritical uses Requires thermal-aging, dimensional and application testing at the intended temperature and load

Key Features of High-Temperature PP Sheet Rolls

Improved thermal-aging resistance: A suitable stabilizer package helps slow oxidation and embrittlement during repeated or prolonged warm-service exposure.

Thermoforming performance: Thin PP roll stock can be heated and formed into trays, containers, covers and technical packaging when the sheet orientation and forming window are controlled.

Low density: PP offers a favorable strength-to-weight ratio for packaging and lightweight fabricated parts.

Low moisture absorption: Polypropylene absorbs very little water and remains suitable for humid environments, washing and many food-processing applications.

Chemical resistance: PP resists many diluted acids, alkalis and aqueous chemicals, but compatibility must be verified for the exact medium, concentration, temperature and exposure time.

Electrical insulation: Natural PP is electrically insulating and can be used for separators or housings where the required dielectric and flammability properties are confirmed.

Custom formulations: Impact resistance, antistatic performance, flame retardancy, conductivity, UV stability and printability can be adjusted subject to test targets and MOQ.

PP Sheet Roll for Thermoforming

Roll-fed PP sheet is commonly used on thermoforming lines because it supports automated heating, forming, trimming and stacking. Successful processing depends on gauge uniformity, roll winding, core alignment, surface friction, sheet orientation, shrinkage and the heating profile across the web.

  • Specify roll width, thickness tolerance, roll diameter, core size and maximum roll weight.

  • Confirm whether the sheet is for positive forming, negative forming, plug assist or pressure forming.

  • Evaluate heating uniformity, sag, shrinkage, wall distribution and flange flatness.

  • Match impact performance and stiffness to the formed-part depth and final load.

  • Test trimming, stacking, denesting and sealing performance at target line speed.

  • Validate dimensional stability after hot filling, microwave heating or repeated temperature cycling.

Applications of Heat-Resistant PP Sheet Rolls

Microwaveable food containers: Thermoformed trays and bowls for reheating applications after migration, seal and heating validation.

Hot-fill packaging: Containers, lids and inserts exposed to elevated product temperatures during filling and cooling.

Food-processing components: Liners, separators, guides and fabricated parts used near warm water, steam-cleaning systems or heated processing areas within the validated service range.

Industrial trays and covers: Thermoformed handling trays, machine covers and protective components subjected to repeated warm cycles.

Chemical-processing liners: Corrosion-resistant liners and covers where both temperature and chemical compatibility have been reviewed.

Electrical and electronics packaging: Insulating separators, battery components and thermoformed trays subject to dielectric, ESD and flame requirements.

Automotive non-structural components: Battery covers, interior shields, separators and housings where the temperature profile, vibration and flammability requirements are validated.

Medical and laboratory products: Trays, housings and organizers only when the formulation, sterilization method and regulatory documentation are specifically qualified.

Chemical Resistance at Elevated Temperatures

Chemical resistance generally decreases as temperature, concentration and exposure time increase. A material that performs well in a diluted chemical at room temperature may swell, creep, crack or lose strength under simultaneous chemical exposure and elevated temperature.

The buyer should provide the chemical name, concentration, temperature, contact time, pressure and mechanical load. Compatibility should be confirmed using the proposed PP grade and a representative formed or fabricated part rather than relying only on a general resistance chart.

Sterilization, Hot Water and Steam Exposure

Some polypropylene grades can tolerate hot-water sanitation, microwave heating or limited steam-sterilization cycles. However, autoclave or steam exposure should not be assumed from a general 130°C rating.

A sterilization specification should include temperature, pressure, dwell time, number of cycles, drying conditions, part load and required dimensional stability. Medical or laboratory use may also require biocompatibility, extractables, traceability and formal change control.

Dimensional Stability and Thermal Expansion

Polypropylene expands more with temperature than metals and many rigid engineering materials. Long unsupported panels, tight assemblies and components fastened to metal frames require sufficient clearance for thermal expansion and contraction.

Higher temperature also increases creep, especially under continuous load. Component design should consider sheet orientation, support spacing, wall thickness, ribs, fastener slots and expected thermal cycles. A high heat-deflection value does not eliminate the need for structural design and testing.

PP Homopolymer vs Copolymer for High-Temperature Use

Grade Type Typical Strength Selection Considerations
PP Homopolymer Higher rigidity, hardness and dimensional stability at elevated temperature Can be less impact resistant at lower temperatures; suitable where stiffness is the priority
PP Block Copolymer Improved impact resistance and lower-temperature toughness Usually lower rigidity at high temperature than homopolymer; useful for impact-sensitive formed parts
Heat-Stabilized PP Improved resistance to thermal oxidation and longer life in warm-service conditions Can be based on homopolymer or copolymer; temperature, impact and chemical requirements must be balanced

Food-Contact and Regulatory Requirements

Food-contact suitability depends on the exact PP resin, heat stabilizers, colorants, fillers, recycled content and intended conditions of use. ISO 9001 is a quality-management-system certification and does not by itself prove that a specific high-temperature PP formulation is suitable for direct food contact.

Buyers should state the destination market, food type, contact duration, maximum temperature, microwave or hot-fill conditions and whether repeated-use approval is required. The applicable declaration, migration testing and supporting reports must be matched to the exact commercial grade.

Frequently Asked Questions About High-Temperature PP Sheet

What is high-temperature-resistant PP sheet?

It is polypropylene selected or modified with heat stabilizers and other additives to improve performance during elevated-temperature processing or service. The formulation depends on the required temperature, exposure time and load.

Can PP sheet continuously operate at 130°C?

The 130°C value should not automatically be treated as a continuous-use rating. Continuous temperature must be confirmed for the exact grade, load, support, chemical environment and expected service life.

What is the difference between service temperature and melting temperature?

Service temperature describes a practical operating condition. Melting temperature is where the crystalline structure melts and is much higher than the safe temperature for a loaded finished part.

What is the difference between heat deflection temperature and continuous-use temperature?

Heat deflection temperature is measured in a short laboratory test under a specified load. Continuous-use temperature concerns long-term performance and aging, so the values are not interchangeable.

What thicknesses are available?

The reference range is 0.125mm to 3mm. Availability depends on width, roll format, surface, formulation and order quantity.

Can high-temperature PP be supplied in rolls?

Yes. Thin gauges can be supplied in rolls with customized width, length, core diameter and roll weight. Thicker gauges may be more suitable as cut sheets.

Can the sheet be thermoformed?

Yes. Suitable grades can be thermoformed into food trays, industrial packaging, covers and technical components. Heating profile, shrinkage and wall distribution must be optimized.

Is heat-resistant PP suitable for microwave food containers?

It can be used for microwaveable containers when the exact formulation, food-contact status, formed-part design and heating instructions have been validated.

Can PP sheet be used for hot-fill packaging?

Yes, selected PP grades can be evaluated for hot filling. The fill temperature, cooling process, container shape, wall thickness and dimensional tolerance must be tested.

Can high-temperature PP be autoclaved?

Autoclave suitability depends on temperature, pressure, cycle time, cycle count and the exact formulation. It should be confirmed through repeated sterilization and dimensional testing.

Is high-temperature PP chemically resistant?

PP resists many acids, alkalis and aqueous chemicals, but resistance decreases with higher temperature, concentration and exposure time. Application-specific compatibility testing is required.

Is the sheet completely waterproof?

Solid PP has very low water absorption and does not readily absorb moisture. Whether a finished product is watertight depends on seams, holes, welds, seals and assembly design.

Is the material food grade?

Food-contact suitability depends on the resin, heat stabilizers, pigments and additives used in the exact grade. Applicable declarations and migration reports should be requested for the intended market and use.

Is high-temperature PP suitable for medical products?

General-purpose material should not be treated as medical grade. Medical use may require biocompatibility, sterilization validation, traceability, cleanliness controls and formal change management.

Can antistatic or conductive grades be supplied?

Antistatic or conductive formulations can be discussed. The required surface resistance, volume resistance, humidity condition and test standard should be provided.

Can flame-retardant high-temperature PP be supplied?

Flame-retardant formulations may be available, but heat resistance and flame performance must be balanced. Provide the required UL 94 or other rating, thickness and end use.

Can the color, texture and width be customized?

Yes. HSQY can discuss custom colors, smooth or textured surfaces, corona treatment, thickness, width, roll length and cut-sheet dimensions.

What is the MOQ?

The reference MOQ is 1,000kg. Special additives, colors, widths and trial formulations may require a different minimum quantity.

Can I receive samples for thermal testing?

Stock or trial samples may be available for thermoforming, thermal aging, chemical exposure, dimensional stability and food-packaging tests. Buyers normally arrange courier freight.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Provide thickness, width, roll size, continuous and peak temperature, exposure duration, load, chemical contact, processing method, color, quantity, destination and required test standards.
