Specification Note: The values above describe the current rigid PVC sheet range. Optical performance, flame behavior, UV resistance, anti-static performance and regulatory suitability depend on the exact formulation and should be confirmed for the specific product grade before ordering.
Clear rigid PVC sheet is a transparent or lightly tinted polyvinyl chloride material formulated to provide stiffness, dimensional stability and useful forming performance without the flexibility associated with plasticized PVC.
The material is used in flat-sheet applications and can also be heated and formed into three-dimensional components. Depending on thickness and grade, it can be cut, printed, die cut, folded, scored, welded, bonded or thermoformed.
For packaging and display applications, transparent PVC provides product visibility while maintaining useful rigidity. For industrial applications, PVC is also valued for its chemical resistance, electrical insulation characteristics and fabrication flexibility.
Good transparency: Clear and blue-tinted transparent options support packaging, display and formed applications where product visibility is important.
Chemical resistance: Rigid PVC provides useful resistance to many industrial chemicals; exact compatibility depends on chemical type, concentration and temperature.
Good rigidity: The sheet maintains useful stiffness for packaging, printing and fabricated components.
Smooth glossy surface: Suitable for visual packaging, printing and decorative conversion.
Thermoforming capability: Suitable grades can be vacuum formed or thermoformed into blisters, trays, covers and other components.
Printing and folding: Selected grades can be printed, die cut, scored and folded for transparent packaging.
Multiple thicknesses: The current extruded sheet range extends from approximately 0.21mm to 6.5mm.
Custom sizes: Standard and customized sheet dimensions are available according to production capability.
Thermoforming is one of the main conversion methods for rigid PVC. During forming, the sheet is heated until it becomes sufficiently formable, shaped over or into a mold and then cooled so that it retains the finished geometry.
Material thickness, heating time, mold geometry, forming depth and machine settings affect final wall thickness and surface appearance. Buyers should test the selected grade on the actual thermoforming equipment before approving high-volume production.
| Thermoforming Factor | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Starting Thickness | Determines the material available before stretching during forming |
| Heating Uniformity | Helps produce consistent forming and surface appearance |
| Forming Depth | Deep draws can reduce local wall thickness |
| Mold Geometry | Corners, ribs and cavities influence material distribution |
| Optical Appearance | Transparency and gloss should be evaluated after forming |
| Finished Wall Thickness | Should be checked on the formed component rather than inferred only from the starting sheet |
Transparent PVC can be converted into folding cartons, clear sleeves, packaging windows and retail boxes where customers need to see the product inside the package.
For folding-box production, important parameters include sheet thickness, stiffness, folding direction, crease geometry, printing system, bonding method and packaged-product weight. The best material should be selected according to the complete box design rather than thickness alone.
Rigid PVC sheet can be used for offset printing, screen printing and other graphic applications when an appropriate printing grade and compatible ink system are selected.
Printing performance depends on surface treatment, ink chemistry, drying or curing process and any later folding or thermoforming operation. Buyers should validate ink adhesion and finished appearance using the actual material before mass production.
HSQY rigid PVC materials can be supplied for different packaging, forming and printing applications. Regulated applications require the correct application-specific material grade and supporting documentation.
PVC Sheet for Vacuum Forming
Application-Specific Medical Packaging PVC
PVC Sheet for Folding Boxes
| Application | Key Selection Factors |
|---|---|
| Vacuum Forming | Thickness, forming depth, clarity, wall distribution and trimming |
| Folding Boxes | Clarity, stiffness, crease performance, printing and bonding |
| Offset Printing | Surface treatment, ink adhesion, curing and dimensional stability |
| Blister & Retail Packaging | Formability, transparency, sealing structure and package rigidity |
| Industrial Fabrication | Thickness, chemical resistance, machining, welding and operating environment |
| Medical Packaging | Dedicated medical packaging grade, sterilization process, regulatory requirements and packaging validation |
A standard transparent PVC sheet should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for every regulated packaging application. Food-contact, medical-device and pharmaceutical uses can require dedicated formulations, migration limits, sterilization compatibility and market-specific documentation.
| PVC Grade | Typical Use | What Must Be Confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| General Clear PVC | Displays, folding boxes, printing and industrial forming | Thickness, clarity, stiffness and conversion method |
| Food-Contact Grade | Selected food packaging applications | Destination market, food type, contact conditions and applicable migration requirements |
| Medical Packaging Grade | Selected medical-device trays and packaging | Sterilization process, packaging validation and applicable requirements |
| Pharmaceutical PVC | Pharmaceutical blister applications | Dedicated pharmaceutical specification, thickness, barrier structure and compliance documents |
| Selection Factor | Rigid PVC | PET / APET |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency | Good transparent and blue-tinted options | High clarity depending on grade |
| Thermoforming | Good forming performance with suitable PVC grade | Widely used for thermoformed transparent packaging |
| Printing & Folding | Commonly used for transparent printed and folding-box applications | Possible depending on sheet grade and converting process |
| Typical Uses | Blisters, folding boxes, printing, displays and formed parts | Trays, clamshells, blisters and transparent packaging |
| Material Selection | Select according to forming equipment, printing, sealing, regulatory requirements, recycling expectations, part design and total packaging cost. | |
The required thickness depends on the finished product rather than the application name alone. The following ranges are general selection references and should be verified through forming or fabrication trials.
| Thickness Range | Typical Consideration |
|---|---|
| 0.21 - 0.5mm | Thin packaging, folding boxes, printing and shallow formed components |
| 0.5 - 1.5mm | More rigid transparent packaging, larger formed parts and fabricated components |
| 1.5 - 3mm | Rigid covers, panels, industrial forming and stronger fabricated parts |
| 3 - 6.5mm | Thicker industrial sheets and fabricated applications where greater stiffness is required |
Rigid PVC is widely used in chemical-processing and industrial environments because it provides resistance to many acids, alkalis, salts and other chemicals.
Chemical compatibility must be evaluated using the exact chemical, concentration, exposure temperature and contact duration. A general statement that PVC is chemically resistant should not replace an application-specific compatibility review.
Rigid PVC can exhibit self-extinguishing behavior depending on formulation and test method. Where a project requires a defined flammability classification, use the applicable tested grade and confirm the standard, thickness and test report before approval.
Anti-static, UV-stabilized and anti-sticking PVC options are also available for selected applications. These properties should be treated as grade-specific functions rather than universal characteristics of every clear PVC sheet.
