PA/PE Medium Barrier Thermoforming Film for Food Packaging

HSQY PA/PE medium barrier film is a multilayer co-extruded flexible packaging film designed for vacuum packaging, thermoforming bottom webs, chilled food, frozen food and selected non-food packaging applications.

The PA and PE multilayer structure combines the toughness and puncture resistance of polyamide with the heat-sealing, flexibility and moisture-resistance properties of polyethylene. Compared with simple PE film, PA/PE provides stronger mechanical performance and improved oxygen and aroma barrier while maintaining good transparency and processability.

HSQY supplies PA/PE medium barrier film in thicknesses from 0.045mm to 0.35mm and widths from 160mm to 2600mm. Thickness, roll width, surface treatment, printing requirements and roll specifications can be customized according to the packaged product, thermoforming machine, sealing process and order quantity.

What Is PA/PE Medium Barrier Film?

PA/PE medium barrier film is a multilayer packaging material that combines polyamide, also known as nylon, with polyethylene. PA contributes mechanical strength, puncture resistance, toughness and moderate oxygen and aroma barrier, while PE contributes heat sealing, flexibility and water-vapor resistance.

PA/PE is commonly selected when a packaging application needs better barrier and mechanical performance than simple PE but does not require the very low oxygen transmission associated with EVOH-containing high barrier structures.

For this reason, PA/PE films are widely used in vacuum packaging and thermoforming packaging for fresh meat, processed meat, fish, seafood, cheese and other chilled or frozen products.

How the PA/PE Multilayer Structure Works

PA Layer – Strength, Puncture Resistance and Barrier

Polyamide provides toughness, puncture resistance, flex-crack resistance and moderate oxygen and aroma barrier. It is particularly useful for products with hard edges, meat fibers, bones, shells or irregular shapes that could damage a weaker packaging film.

PE Layer – Heat Sealing, Flexibility and Moisture Resistance

Polyethylene provides the primary heat-sealing surface and contributes flexibility and resistance to water-vapor transmission. The exact seal initiation temperature, seal strength and sealing window depend on the PE formulation and packaging machine.

Tie Layers – Stable Multilayer Adhesion

Tie layers help bond PA and PE together during multilayer co-extrusion because the two polymers do not naturally adhere equally well without a compatible adhesive-resin layer.

Key Features of PA/PE Medium Barrier Film

Medium Oxygen Barrier: PA provides better oxygen and aroma barrier than standard PE structures, making PA/PE suitable for products that require moderate shelf-life protection but do not require an EVOH ultra-high-barrier structure.

Strong Puncture Resistance: Nylon layers improve resistance to puncture and mechanical stress during forming, vacuum packaging, storage and transportation.

Good Thermoforming Performance: Suitable PA/PE structures can be used as bottom webs on vacuum thermoforming packaging lines where flexibility and controlled forming are required.

Reliable Heat Sealing: PE sealant layers support secure package closure when the film grade and sealing parameters are matched to the packaging equipment.

Moisture Resistance: PE contributes water-vapor resistance that helps reduce drying or external moisture transmission through the film structure.

High Transparency: Clear film allows packaged meat, seafood, cheese and other products to remain visible for inspection and retail presentation.

Good Machinability: PA/PE films can be designed for stable performance on automatic vacuum and thermoforming packaging equipment.

Printable Options: Printing can be discussed where required. Surface treatment, ink system, number of colors and print side should be confirmed before production.

Custom Roll Specifications: Thickness, width, roll diameter, core size and packaging can be adjusted according to converting and packaging equipment requirements.

Applications of PA/PE Medium Barrier Film

Fresh Meat Packaging: Suitable PA/PE structures can be used for beef, pork, poultry and processed meats where puncture resistance, vacuum performance and moderate oxygen barrier are required.

Cheese and Dairy Products: PA/PE can provide useful mechanical strength, sealing and moisture protection for selected refrigerated dairy applications.

Fish and Seafood: Tough PA layers help improve package resistance when packing fish, seafood and products with irregular shapes or hard edges.

Processed Food: PA/PE can be evaluated for sausages, deli meat and selected prepared food applications where medium barrier and reliable sealing are sufficient.

Frozen Food: Suitable low-temperature grades can be used where the package must remain flexible and mechanically stable during frozen storage.

Non-Food Packaging: PA/PE films may also be used for selected industrial and consumer products requiring toughness, sealing and moisture protection.

       Discuss Your PA/PE Packaging Application

PA/PE Film for Thermoforming Packaging

PA/PE film is widely used as a thermoforming bottom web for vacuum food packaging. During production, the film is heated and drawn into a cavity before the food is loaded and a top web is sealed to the package.

The bottom web must retain sufficient thickness and mechanical strength after forming. Film gauge should therefore be selected according to cavity depth, product dimensions, product weight and packaging-machine settings rather than by thickness alone.

For deep-draw applications, provide cavity depth, tray dimensions, corner radius and your current film specification so HSQY can evaluate the required gauge and PA content.

PA/PE Film for Vacuum Packaging

Vacuum packaging removes most of the air around a food product before the package is heat sealed. PA/PE film combines the mechanical toughness needed to conform around the product with moderate oxygen barrier and PE sealability.

Package performance depends not only on the film but also on vacuum level, seal integrity, food characteristics, storage temperature and expected shelf life. For oxygen-sensitive foods requiring significantly lower OTR, an EVOH-containing high barrier structure may be more appropriate.

PA/PE Medium Barrier Film vs. PA/EVOH/PE High Barrier Film

Comparison PA/PE Medium Barrier Film PA/EVOH/PE High Barrier Film
Main Barrier Material PA EVOH + PA
Oxygen Barrier Medium High to very high depending on structure
Puncture Resistance Good Good, depending on PA content
Thermoforming Widely used Widely used where higher barrier is required
Typical Selection Standard vacuum packaging and medium shelf-life requirements More oxygen-sensitive foods and longer shelf-life targets
Cost Position Generally simpler barrier structure More complex high-barrier structure

Is PA/PE Film Suitable for High Temperature Packaging?

Standard PA/PE medium barrier film should not automatically be described as a retort or high-temperature film. Its suitability depends on the exact PA grade, PE sealant, tie layers, processing temperature, exposure time and package design.

For standard vacuum packaging, chilled storage and frozen-food applications, PA/PE is widely used. For hot filling, boiling, pasteurization or retort sterilization, the required process conditions must be provided before a suitable structure is selected.

Where higher thermal resistance is required, a PA/PP or specifically validated high-temperature multilayer structure may be more appropriate than standard PA/PE film.

How to Choose PA/PE Medium Barrier Film

1. Define the Packaged Product

Specify whether you are packaging fresh meat, bone-in meat, fish, seafood, cheese, sausage, frozen food or an industrial product. Product shape and sensitivity determine the required barrier and puncture resistance.

2. Confirm Whether Medium Barrier Is Sufficient

Provide the expected shelf life and storage conditions. If the product requires very low oxygen transmission, PA/EVOH/PE may be a better choice than standard PA/PE.

3. Select the Appropriate Thickness

HSQY currently lists 0.045mm to 0.35mm. The correct thickness depends on thermoforming depth, product weight, puncture risk, package dimensions and machine conditions.

4. Confirm Thermoforming Depth

For thermoforming applications, provide cavity length, width, depth and corner radius. Deep forming can substantially reduce film thickness in corners and requires the correct gauge and material distribution.

5. Confirm Sealing Conditions

Provide sealing temperature, dwell time, sealing pressure and top-web material where available. The PE seal layer must be compatible with the complete packaging system.

6. Confirm Storage Temperature

For frozen applications, specify the minimum storage temperature and storage duration. If heat processing is involved, also provide the maximum processing temperature and exposure time.

7. Confirm Machine and Roll Specifications

Provide the packaging machine brand, model, working width, core diameter, maximum roll diameter and existing film specification whenever possible.

Technical Data Buyers Should Confirm

Professional packaging buyers should evaluate the actual grade using measurable data rather than relying only on the description “medium barrier.”
