What Is a Solid Polycarbonate Sheet?

A solid polycarbonate sheet is a single-layer, non-hollow thermoplastic panel made from polycarbonate resin. Unlike multiwall polycarbonate, solid PC sheet has a continuous cross-section and is selected where transparency, impact resistance, flatness and fabrication performance are important.

Clear grades can be used as a lightweight alternative to glass in skylights, protective glazing, machine guards and transparent barriers. Colored, tinted and opal grades can be selected where glare control, privacy, appearance or reduced light transmission is required.

For outdoor applications, a UV-protected grade should be selected. HSQY can provide single-side and double-side UV options depending on which surfaces will be exposed to sunlight.

Key Advantages of Solid Polycarbonate Sheet

High Impact Resistance

Polycarbonate is widely selected for safety glazing, machine guards and protective panels because it provides much higher impact resistance than conventional glazing materials. Exact impact performance depends on thickness, grade and test method.

High Light Transmission

Selected clear HSQY solid PC sheets can provide more than 85% light transmission according to the current product information, making them suitable for daylighting, glazing, transparent covers and rooflight applications.

UV-Protected Options for Outdoor Use

UV protection helps reduce surface degradation and yellowing caused by long-term sunlight exposure. Single-side UV protection can be used where one surface faces outdoors, while double-side UV protection can be considered where both surfaces may receive sunlight.

Lightweight Compared with Glass

Polycarbonate has a lower density than glass, which can reduce handling weight and make large panels easier to transport, cut and install.

Easy to Fabricate

Solid PC sheet can be cut, drilled, routed, machined, printed and fabricated with suitable equipment. This makes it useful for both standard rectangular panels and customized industrial components.

Single-Side vs Double-Side UV Polycarbonate Sheet

UV Option Typical Use Installation Consideration
Single-Side UV Roofing, skylights and glazing where one side is consistently exposed to sunlight UV-protected side must face the intended exposure direction
Double-Side UV Canopies, partitions, barriers and applications where either surface may receive sunlight Provides more installation flexibility where both surfaces may be exposed

Custom Cut Polycarbonate Sheet

Buying full-size PC sheets is not always efficient for manufacturers that need fixed panel dimensions or repeated components. HSQY can discuss cut-to-size solid polycarbonate panels according to customer drawings, finished dimensions and order volume.

Custom cutting can reduce downstream handling and material waste while helping customers receive panels that better match the final glazing opening, machine guard, equipment cover or fabricated component.

When requesting cut-to-size service, provide finished width, length, thickness, quantity, required dimensional tolerance, edge requirement and whether drilling or additional machining is needed.

Applications of Solid Polycarbonate Sheet

Solid PC sheet is used in construction, transportation, industrial equipment, electrical products and specialized fabricated components where a combination of transparency, toughness and processing flexibility is required.

Architectural Glazing and Roofing

Clear or tinted UV-protected sheets can be used for skylights, rooflights, canopies, covered walkways, partitions, greenhouse glazing and other daylighting applications.

Machine Guards and Safety Panels

High impact resistance makes solid PC sheet suitable for transparent machine covers, protective guards, equipment windows and industrial safety partitions.

Sound and Protective Barriers

Thick solid polycarbonate panels can be considered for transparent protective screens, roadside barriers and selected noise-control applications where visibility is required.

Electronics and Industrial Components

Application-specific PC grades can be fabricated into insulating components, covers, housings and mechanical parts. Engineering properties should be confirmed according to the exact resin grade and end-use requirement.

Card and Identification Applications

Specialized polycarbonate materials can be used in identification, smart-card and secure-document applications involving printing or engraving. These applications generally require dedicated thin-gauge or optical-grade PC products rather than standard construction sheet.

Medical and Technical Components

Polycarbonate is used in selected medical and laboratory components, but medical applications require application-specific resin grades, regulatory documentation and validation. General-purpose construction sheet should not automatically be treated as medical grade.

Construction and Glazing Application

Solid Polycarbonate vs Acrylic vs Glass

Comparison Polycarbonate Acrylic Glass
Impact Resistance Very high Lower than PC Lower and brittle under impact
Weight Lightweight Lightweight Heavier
Fabrication Easy to cut, drill and machine Easy to fabricate but more brittle Requires specialized glass processing
Outdoor Use Use suitable UV-protected grade Good weatherability depending on grade Good outdoor durability
Typical Selection Safety glazing, guards, roofing and high-impact applications Displays, signs and glazing where optical appearance is prioritized Conventional architectural glazing

How to Select Solid Polycarbonate Sheet Thickness

The correct thickness depends on panel dimensions, support spacing, expected impact, wind load, fixing method, allowable deflection and local building requirements. A thicker sheet is not automatically the correct choice unless the complete installation conditions are considered.

Selection Factor Information to Confirm
Panel Size Width, length and unsupported span
Application Glazing, roofing, machine guard, partition, barrier or fabricated component
Mechanical Load Wind, impact, handling and other expected loads
Support Structure Frame spacing and fixing method
Local Standards Applicable building, safety or fire requirements

Installation Considerations for Polycarbonate Glazing

Polycarbonate expands and contracts more with temperature changes than glass or metal framing. Glazing systems should therefore allow suitable expansion clearance rather than clamping the sheet rigidly on all sides.

Fixing holes should be designed with the sheet's thermal movement in mind, and fasteners should not be over-tightened. Appropriate washers, glazing profiles and compatible sealants should be selected for the project.

Where single-side UV protection is specified, install the protected side toward the sunlight. Always follow the engineering requirements and installation guidance applicable to the selected sheet and project.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean polycarbonate sheets using lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse the surface thoroughly to remove loose dirt before wiping.

Avoid abrasive pads, scrapers and aggressive cleaning chemicals that may scratch, craze or damage the surface. Chemical compatibility should be confirmed before using solvents, adhesives, sealants or coatings on the sheet.
