What Is an Anti-Scratch PET Sheet?

An anti-scratch PET sheet is a rigid polyethylene terephthalate substrate with a modified surface designed to resist scratches, scuffs and abrasion more effectively than untreated PET. The improved surface may be created through a cured hard coating, wear-resistant layer or another application-specific treatment.

Standard PET already provides good clarity, impact resistance and dimensional stability, but transportation, stacking, die cutting, assembly, cleaning and repeated handling can leave visible marks. A properly selected hard coat helps preserve a cleaner appearance in high-contact packaging, display and protective applications.

Important: Anti-scratch does not mean scratch-proof. Sharp tools, abrasive particles, excessive pressure, aggressive cleaners and unsuitable processing can still damage the coating. Buyers should define hardness, abrasion and chemical-resistance targets using agreed test methods.

How Scratch Resistance Should Be Specified

“Anti-scratch” is a general description. A purchasing specification should define how the surface is tested, which side is coated and what level of visible change is acceptable.

Parameter What It Measures Information to Confirm
Pencil hardness Resistance of the coating to marking under a defined pencil and load Test standard, pencil grade, load, angle, conditioning and acceptance criteria
Abrasion resistance Surface change after repeated rubbing or abrasive contact Abrasive wheel or cloth, load, cycle count, haze change and visual limit
Coating adhesion Bond of the hard coat to the PET substrate Cross-cut or peel test, forming conditions, cleaning exposure and acceptable coating loss
Chemical resistance Resistance to cleaners, alcohol, oils, cosmetics or process chemicals Chemical, concentration, temperature, contact time, cleaning frequency and acceptable appearance change
Optical performance Transparency, haze, gloss and visual clarity Minimum light transmission, maximum haze, gloss target and inspection method

Single-Side vs. Double-Side Hard-Coated PET

Coating Type Main Advantage Selection Guidance
Single-side coating Protects the exposed surface while leaving the reverse side available for printing, adhesive or lamination Common for packaging windows, overlays, furniture laminates and printed panels
Double-side coating Provides improved protection where both surfaces are handled, exposed or cleaned Suitable for reusable covers, display panels and applications with two exposed faces

Double-side coating can increase cost and may reduce ink, adhesive or lamination adhesion. The function of each surface should be defined before the coating structure is selected.

Key Benefits of Transparent Hard-Coated PET

1. Improved surface durability: The hard coat reduces visible scuffs and handling marks compared with untreated PET under equivalent conditions.

2. High transparency: Clear grades maintain product visibility for packaging windows, protective covers and retail displays.

3. Lower breakage risk than glass: PET is lightweight and less likely to shatter during cutting, transport or end use.

4. Good dimensional stability: The sheet supports accurate printing, die cutting, punching and assembly.

5. Custom optical finishes: Clear glossy, matte, frosted and anti-glare surfaces can be evaluated for different visual requirements.

6. Sheet and roll formats: Standard 1220 × 2440mm panels and customized rolls support different converters and production lines.

7. Protective masking option: Removable film can protect the coated surface during fabrication, transport and installation.

Printing, Folding and Bonding Guidance

A hard-coated surface may provide different ink and adhesive behavior from untreated PET. The printing side and exposed side should be defined before production.

Printing: Test screen, UV, offset or digital inks for adhesion, curing, color density and rub resistance on the exact side.

Die cutting: Use sharp tooling and verify edge quality, coating chipping and protective-film behavior.

Creasing and folding: Match crease geometry, fold radius and sheet temperature to reduce cracking, whitening or coating separation.

Adhesive bonding: Select a PET-compatible adhesive and verify bond strength, blooming, transparency and long-term aging.

Lamination: Confirm whether the bonding side is untreated or specially primed because some hard coats reduce adhesive anchorage.

Thermoforming and Vacuum Forming Guidance

Not every anti-scratch coating is formable. A coating that performs well on a flat panel may crack, whiten or lose adhesion during deep drawing.

Forming depth: Provide draw ratio, cavity depth, corner radius and mold geometry.

Coating orientation: Confirm whether the hard-coated side is inside or outside the formed component.

Heating profile: Validate sheet temperature, heater type, cycle time and mold temperature.

Finished appearance: Inspect the part for coating cracks, haze, whitening, delamination and surface distortion.

Production trial: Test the exact mold and process before ordering a large quantity.

Standard PET vs. Anti-Scratch PET vs. PETG and Polycarbonate

Property Standard PET Anti-Scratch PET PETG Polycarbonate
Surface durability Basic Improved through coating Basic unless coated Basic unless hard coated
Transparency High High with a clear coating High High
Thermoforming Suitable with the correct grade Requires a formable coating and testing Generally easier to form Formable with suitable process control
Impact performance Good Good, depending on substrate Good Very high
Typical selection reason Cost-effective clear sheet Better long-term appearance Complex forming and fabrication High-impact engineering use

Functional Coating Options

Scratch resistance can be combined with other functions, but each additional feature changes optical performance, processing behavior, cost and MOQ.

Anti-glare: Reduces reflected light but normally increases haze and can reduce image sharpness.

Anti-fingerprint: Helps reduce visible fingerprints and cleaning frequency on frequently handled surfaces.

Chemical resistance: Customized for exposure to cleaners, alcohol, cosmetics, oils or industrial chemicals.

Anti-static: Requires a defined surface-resistance range and expected duration of performance.

UV resistance: Requires a UV-stabilized coating or substrate and an agreed exposure test.

Printable surface: Uses treatment or primer designed for the specified ink and curing process.

Food, Medical and Safety Use Requirements

General-purpose anti-scratch PET should not automatically be described as food-grade, medical-grade, flame-retardant, UV-stabilized or antistatic. Each application requires the correct formulation and supporting documentation.

Food contact: Request documentation for the exact PET substrate, coating, color and contact conditions.

Medical or laboratory use: Confirm chemical resistance, cleaning, biocompatibility, hygiene and device-specific requirements.

Safety glazing: PET should not be treated as certified safety glazing without impact, fire and application-specific testing.

Outdoor exposure: Define UV exposure, temperature, weathering cycle and expected service life before selecting a grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between anti-scratch PET and standard PET?

Standard PET has an untreated or conventionally treated surface. Anti-scratch PET uses an additional hard coat or surface treatment to improve resistance to scuffs, abrasion and handling marks.

Does anti-scratch mean the sheet cannot be scratched?

No. It means the surface performs better than untreated PET under defined test conditions. Sharp tools, abrasive dirt and excessive pressure can still cause damage.

What pencil hardness is available?

The available hardness depends on the coating, substrate, thickness and forming requirements. Targets such as 1H, 2H or 3H can be evaluated using an agreed test method.

Is 1220 × 2440mm a standard sheet size?

Yes. HSQY lists 1220 × 2440mm as a standard size and can also supply smaller panels, customized cut sheets and selected roll widths.

Can both sides of the PET sheet be hard coated?

Yes. Single-side and double-side coating can be discussed. Double-side coating may affect printing, adhesive bonding, cost and forming performance.

Can anti-scratch PET sheet be printed?

Yes, when the printing side and coating are compatible with the ink. Test ink adhesion, curing, color density, rub resistance and post-print conversion.

Can anti-scratch PET sheet be thermoformed?

Certain formable grades can be thermoformed, but deep drawing may crack or whiten a conventional hard coat. Test the actual mold, draw ratio and heating profile.

Is anti-static performance included?

Not automatically. Anti-static performance requires a separate formulation or coating and a defined surface-resistance range.

Is the sheet UV resistant?

Standard anti-scratch PET should not automatically be treated as UV-stabilized. Specify the exposure, test method and expected service life for outdoor use.

Is the PET sheet flame resistant?

No general flame rating should be assumed. Require a report covering the exact PET grade, coating and thickness.

Can anti-scratch PET replace glass?

It can replace glass in some lightweight packaging windows, covers and displays, but PET differs in stiffness, heat resistance, hardness and fire performance. The final design must be validated.

How should the sheet be cleaned?

Remove loose dust first, then use a soft non-abrasive cloth and a cleaner approved for the coating. Avoid abrasive pads, powders, sharp tools and untested solvents.

Can protective masking film be added?

Yes. One-side or double-side masking can protect the surface during cutting, assembly and shipping. Peel force and removal conditions should be confirmed.

Is the finished anti-scratch PET product recyclable?

PET is recyclable, but coatings, inks, adhesives, protective films and laminates may affect local sorting and recycling. Confirm acceptance with the destination recycling system.

Can I request a sample before bulk production?

Available samples can be supplied for appearance, hardness, printing, folding, forming, cleaning and chemical-resistance evaluation.
