HSQY PP Plastic Meat Trays

8.9×6.3×1.6 Inch Black PP Fresh Meat Tray

HSQY HS22164 is a rectangular black polypropylene meat tray designed for the packaging, display and transportation of fresh meat, poultry, seafood, vegetables and other chilled food products.

The primary tray size is 226×161×40mm, approximately 8.9×6.3×1.6 inches. A deeper 226×161×50mm option is also listed in the current product range for applications requiring additional product depth or fill volume.

The black tray provides strong visual contrast for beef, pork, lamb, poultry, seafood and other fresh proteins in refrigerated retail displays. Standard colors currently include black, white, clear and other customized colors subject to order requirements.

This page describes a standard PP fresh-meat tray. If your project requires modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum skin packaging (VSP), a defined oxygen transmission rate or extended shelf-life performance, specify the required packaging system so HSQY can evaluate a suitable high-barrier PP or multilayer tray instead of assuming that standard PP provides the required gas barrier.

Why Use a Black PP Tray for Fresh Meat Packaging?

Strong Retail Presentation

Black trays create a strong visual contrast with red meat, poultry, seafood and other fresh foods, helping products stand out in refrigerated retail displays.

Moisture and Grease Resistance

Polypropylene does not absorb liquid in the way paper-based materials do and provides a practical surface for packaging foods containing moisture, fat and meat juices.

Rigid Product Support

The tray provides structural support during filling, wrapping, stacking, transportation and refrigerated display. Final tray stiffness depends on resin grade, wall thickness and tray design.

Lightweight Packaging

Thermoformed PP trays provide a lightweight rigid-packaging format for meat processors, butcher shops, supermarket packing operations and food distributors.

Multiple Packaging Options

Depending on the tray design and exact material specification, PP meat trays may be used with overwrap films or evaluated with compatible lidding systems. MAP and VSP require packaging-system-specific tray and film structures and should be specified separately.

226×161mm Meat Tray Applications

Beef Packaging

The rectangular format can be used for retail portions of steak, diced beef, minced beef and other fresh beef products when the tray dimensions and load capacity match the portion.

Pork and Lamb Packaging

Black PP meat trays provide a conventional retail presentation for pork chops, sliced pork, lamb cuts and other chilled protein products.

Poultry Packaging

Chicken breast, thighs, wings and other poultry portions can be packed in suitable PP trays together with the appropriate film and, where required, an absorbent pad.

Seafood Packaging

The moisture-resistant PP structure can also be evaluated for chilled fish and seafood portions where tray dimensions, packaging film and cold-chain conditions meet the product requirements.

Vegetables and Fresh Foods

PP trays may also be used for vegetables, prepared ingredients and other refrigerated foods where a rigid rectangular display tray is required.

40mm vs 50mm Deep PP Meat Tray

Size Relative Depth Typical Selection Logic
226×161×40mm Standard 40mm depth Standard retail portions and products requiring a lower tray profile
226×161×50mm 10mm deeper Larger portions, thicker products or applications requiring greater tray depth

Tray depth should be selected according to the actual meat dimensions, portion weight, headspace, absorbent-pad thickness and film-wrapping or sealing process.

Overwrap vs Heat Seal vs MAP vs VSP Meat Packaging

The correct tray should be selected together with the packaging technology. A standard PP tray should not automatically be described as a MAP or VSP tray unless its structure and sealing surface have been designed and validated for that system.

Packaging System Typical Configuration Tray Requirement
Overwrap Tray + stretch / cling overwrap film + optional absorbent pad Standard meat tray may be suitable after packaging-line testing
Heat-Sealed Tray Tray + compatible top-seal lidding film Requires compatible sealing flange and film
MAP High-barrier tray + high-barrier lidding film + controlled gas atmosphere Specify high-barrier PP / EVOH or other validated structure and target OTR
VSP Skin-compatible tray + vacuum skin film Requires VSP-compatible tray surface, flange and film system

Standard PP Is Not Automatically a High-Barrier Tray

The original page stated that the PP tray itself blocks oxygen and extends fresh-meat shelf life. This should not be used as a universal product claim.

Standard polypropylene provides useful moisture resistance, but defined oxygen-barrier performance for MAP meat packaging normally requires a validated high-barrier structure, such as a multilayer PP tray containing an oxygen-barrier layer, together with a suitable lidding film and controlled gas composition.

If your project requires MAP, provide the required oxygen transmission rate, storage temperature, product shelf-life target, gas mixture and lidding-film specification so the appropriate tray structure can be evaluated.

What Determines Fresh Meat Shelf Life?

A meat tray alone does not determine shelf life. Freshness and shelf life depend on the entire packaging and cold-chain system.

Factor Why It Matters
Meat Type Beef, poultry, pork, lamb and seafood have different microbial and color-stability characteristics
Initial Microbial Load Processing hygiene and handling strongly influence achievable shelf life
Storage Temperature Continuous refrigerated temperature control is critical for fresh proteins
Packaging Film Film oxygen and moisture transmission affect the internal package environment
Tray Barrier Standard or high-barrier structure must match the packaging system
Seal Integrity Poor seals can compromise MAP or other sealed packaging systems
Gas Mixture MAP performance depends on the specified CO₂, O₂ and N₂ mixture for the particular food
Distribution Time Shelf-life validation must cover production, transportation and retail display

Can This PP Meat Tray Be Used with an Absorbent Pad?

An absorbent pad can be evaluated for fresh meat, poultry or seafood applications where purge or meat juices need to be managed inside the package.

Pad dimensions, absorption capacity and food-contact requirements should be selected according to the meat type, portion size and expected purge volume. The pad should not interfere with the tray sealing area where top sealing is used.

Is This PP Meat Tray Microwave Safe?

Polypropylene as a material can be used in many microwaveable food-packaging applications, but microwave suitability is grade- and product-specific.

The current HSQY product page describes this particular fresh-meat tray for packaging and refrigeration and does not provide a validated microwave temperature or heating-time specification. It should therefore not be marketed as microwave-safe unless HSQY confirms the exact tray grade and applicable test conditions.

Is This PP Tray Suitable for Conventional Ovens?

Standard PP fresh-meat trays should not be promoted as conventional-oven trays. Applications requiring high oven temperatures should use a material and tray specifically designed and validated for that heating process.

How to Choose a Fresh Meat Packaging Tray

1. Define the Meat Product

Specify beef, pork, poultry, lamb, seafood, processed meat or another product because packaging requirements differ by product type.

2. Provide the Portion Dimensions and Weight

Provide the approximate product length, width, height and weight to determine whether the 226×161×40mm or 226×161×50mm tray is more suitable.

3. Choose Overwrap, Heat Seal, MAP or VSP

Packaging technology determines the required tray flange, barrier structure, film and sealing system. Do not select a tray based only on its external dimensions.

4. Define the Shelf-Life Target

If extended shelf life is required, provide the current shelf life, target shelf life, storage temperature and packaging method so the barrier requirement can be evaluated.

5. Select Tray Color

Black provides strong contrast for many fresh meat products. White, clear and custom colors can be evaluated according to branding, retailer requirements and MOQ.

6. Determine Whether an Absorbent Pad Is Needed

Fresh meat products that release purge may require an absorbent pad. Specify expected liquid volume and required pad dimensions.

7. Confirm Packaging-Machine Compatibility

For automatic denesting, sealing or wrapping lines, provide the machine manufacturer, model and existing tray drawing to confirm fit and handling.

Important B2B Parameters to Confirm

Parameter Why It Matters
External Dimensions Determines carton, filling line, sealing tool and shelf-space compatibility
Internal Dimensions Determines actual food fit and usable capacity
Tray Depth Must accommodate product thickness and absorbent pad
Tray Weight Useful for material comparison, costing and stiffness control
Flange Width Critical when using a heat-seal lidding film
Denesting Performance Important for automated meat-packing lines
Material Structure Distinguishes standard PP from high-barrier multilayer trays
OTR / WVTR Required where defined MAP barrier performance is specified
Seal Strength Relevant for heat-sealed, MAP and VSP systems
Food-Contact Documentation Must match the actual resin grade and target market

Packing and Bulk Supply

Case Pack: The current HS22164 product information lists 300 trays per case.

Commercial MOQ: The current product listing specifies 30,000 pieces. Customized colors, dimensions or new tooling may require a different MOQ.

Bulk Packaging: Tray nesting, carton dimensions and pallet configuration should be confirmed according to the selected tray depth, destination market and transportation method.

For automated food-packing plants, request samples from the same intended production specification to evaluate denesting, line handling, film compatibility and finished-pack performance before placing a high-volume order.

Food-Contact and Quality Documentation

Food-contact suitability should be confirmed using documentation that applies to the exact PP resin, color masterbatch, tray grade, manufacturing specification and destination market.

Buyers should request current applicable declarations, migration or food-contact test information and any required quality documentation before commercial use instead of relying on general statements such as “food grade.”

Recycling Considerations

Polypropylene is identified as resin identification code #5. Whether a used PP meat tray can actually be recycled depends on local collection and sorting infrastructure, tray color, food contamination, absorbent pads, labels, films and other components in the finished package.

Therefore the complete pack should not automatically be marketed as universally recyclable without considering the recycling system in the destination market.
