What Is Matte PET Sheet?

Matte PET sheet is a polyethylene terephthalate sheet with a low-gloss or textured surface on one or both sides. The matte effect may be produced through embossing, surface treatment, coextrusion or a specialized coating, depending on the grade and intended converting process.

Compared with glossy PET, the matte surface reduces reflections, hides light handling marks and gives packaging or printed products a softer appearance. Thermoforming-grade APET can also be heated and formed into trays, covers, inserts and packaging components.

Product-positioning note: The listed 0.18mm–1.2mm product is a matte PET sheet or heavy-gauge roll for forming, printing and folding. True matte BOPET flexible-packaging film is normally much thinner and should be developed on a separate page with its own coating, corona treatment, lamination and sealing specifications.

Key Benefits of Matte Polyester Sheet

1. Low-gloss premium appearance: The matte surface reduces direct reflections and gives packaging, covers and printed graphics a softer visual finish.

2. Reduced fingerprints and handling marks: Texture helps make light surface contamination and minor scuffs less visible than on a glossy sheet.

3. Thermoforming capability: Compatible APET grades can be formed into trays, covers, inserts and packaging components on suitable equipment.

4. Printing versatility: The correct surface can support screen or UV offset printing after ink adhesion, curing and rub-resistance testing.

5. Good dimensional stability: PET helps maintain flatness and registration during printing, cutting and conversion.

6. Moisture and chemical resistance: The sheet resists water and many common oils or cleaning chemicals under compatible conditions.

7. Recyclable thermoplastic: PET can enter suitable PET recycling streams where local collection, sorting and end-product construction permit.

Matte/Matte vs. Matte/Gloss PET Surface

Surface Visual and Processing Characteristics Common Uses
Matte/matte Low glare on both sides and more consistent handling appearance Binding covers, stationery, dividers, printed panels and decorative sheets
Matte/gloss Premium matte appearance on one side with a smoother or clearer reverse surface Folding boxes, windows, printed packaging and applications requiring different front and back functions

Printing and Converting Guidance

Matte surface texture can improve appearance but may change ink coverage, color density and contact area. Printing and converting trials should be completed on the exact production surface before mass production.

Screen printing: Select PET-compatible ink and verify opacity, adhesion, drying, flexibility and rub resistance.

UV offset printing: Confirm sheet feeding, static control, UV curing, heat buildup, stacking and blocking.

Die cutting: Use sharp tooling and validate edge quality, dimensional recovery and dust generation.

Creasing and folding: Match crease depth, rule geometry, fold radius and sheet orientation to the selected thickness.

Bonding: Use PET-compatible adhesives and test transparency, blooming, cure time and bond strength.

Thermoforming: Validate heating profile, mold temperature, draw ratio, wall distribution and cooling on the exact resin and surface.

Applications of Matte PET Sheet

Folding boxes and packaging windows: Premium retail boxes for cosmetics, stationery, clothing, electronics and consumer products.

Thermoformed trays and covers: Formed packaging, inserts and covers made from an approved thermoforming grade.

Printing and display: Screen-printed or UV-offset printed panels, signage, menu covers and retail-display components.

Binding and stationery: Book covers, folders, dividers, document covers, writing boards and reusable office products.

Food-contact packaging: Trays, covers or windows only when the exact finished grade is supported by applicable food-contact documentation.

Food-Contact and Sustainability Requirements

PET is recyclable, but it is not normally biodegradable or naturally degradable under standard disposal conditions. Recycling claims should be based on the final product structure, local collection system, inks, coatings, adhesives and labels.

Food contact: Request current migration or declaration documents for the exact resin, matte treatment, color and intended temperature.

Recycled content: RPET may be available for selected applications, but appearance, thermoforming and food-contact requirements must be evaluated.

Printing and coatings: Inks, primers and coatings can affect recyclability and regulatory status.

Finished-package validation: The converter or brand owner should validate the completed package under actual filling, storage and distribution conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this product matte PET sheet or flexible BOPET film?

The listed 0.18mm–1.2mm thickness range and cut-sheet sizes identify it as a semi-rigid or rigid matte PET sheet. Thin BOPET flexible packaging film is a different product category and should use separate specifications.

What is the difference between matte PET and glossy PET?

Matte PET has a low-gloss or textured surface that reduces reflections and hides handling marks. Glossy PET provides stronger surface shine and generally higher visual clarity.

Is matte PET sheet the same as matte APET sheet?

APET is amorphous PET commonly used for rigid thermoforming sheet. A matte thermoforming PET product may therefore be supplied as matte APET, but the exact resin and structure should be confirmed on the technical data sheet.

Can matte PET sheet be thermoformed?

Yes, suitable APET grades can be vacuum or pressure formed. Heating, draw ratio, mold design and wall distribution must be validated on the actual sheet.

Can matte PET be UV offset printed?

It can be UV offset printed when the surface and ink are compatible. Test adhesion, curing, static control, color density, blocking and post-print folding before production.

Can matte PET be screen printed?

Yes. Use a PET-compatible ink and verify opacity, drying, adhesion, flexibility and abrasion resistance on the production surface.

Is matte PET suitable for folding boxes?

Yes. Matte PET can be die cut, creased and folded into retail boxes. Crease geometry, thickness, fold radius and adhesive must be tested to reduce cracking or whitening.

Is matte PET sheet food safe?

Food-contact suitability depends on the exact resin, additives, matte treatment and intended conditions. Request current documentation for the selected HSQY grade and destination market.

Is PET biodegradable?

No. Conventional PET is not normally biodegradable under standard disposal conditions. It is a recyclable thermoplastic where suitable collection and recycling infrastructure exists.

What thicknesses and widths are available?

The listed thickness range is 0.18mm–1.2mm, with roll widths from 110mm to 1280mm. Availability depends on surface, color, roll format and order quantity.
