Description

What Is 230mm Tray Sealing Film?

230mm tray sealing film is a medium-width lidding-film roll developed for heat-sealing compatible CPET food trays on manual, semi-automatic, and automatic tray-sealing equipment. The standard roll size on this page is 230mm wide × 500m long.

The 230mm web is commonly selected for medium-format meal trays and tray-sealer tooling where 150mm film is too narrow but 280mm film would create unnecessary trim. HSQY can supply clear or printed film with easy-peel, medium-peel, weld-seal, anti-fog, high-barrier, freezer-compatible, microwave-compatible, and application-specific ovenable options.

The final film must be matched to the actual tray flange and packaging process. Roll width alone does not determine compatibility. The tray resin, sealant chemistry, machine, tooling, sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, food product, storage conditions, and reheating cycle should be tested together before commercial production.

Why Choose a 230mm Wide Lidding-Film Roll?

  • Medium-width coverage: Suitable for selected CPET trays and tooling layouts that require more coverage than a 150mm web.

  • Material efficiency: A correctly selected 230mm roll can reduce unnecessary edge trim compared with an oversized film web.

  • Machine compatibility: Roll width, core, winding direction, outer diameter, and roll weight can be matched to the tray sealer.

  • Controlled seal performance: Easy-peel, medium-peel, and weld-seal grades can be selected according to the required opening behavior.

  • Optional anti-fog: Helps maintain visibility for chilled and high-moisture foods.

  • Optional high barrier: EVOH or another barrier layer can be considered for MAP and extended shelf-life applications.

  • Custom printing: Supports branding, product information, preparation instructions, traceability, and date coding.

  • Custom conversion: Thickness, roll length, core size, winding direction, and maximum roll diameter can be configured.

Is 230mm the Correct Film Width for Your Tray?

A 230mm roll should be selected only after checking the full sealing-tool layout. The usable film must cover the tray flange and include sufficient allowance for registration, cutting, and edge trim without creating unnecessary waste.

Width-Selection Item Why It Matters Information to Provide
Tray Outside Dimensions The film must cover the outer sealing flange, not only the food cavity. Provide maximum outside tray length and width.
Tooling Layout One or more trays may be placed across the film web. Provide cavity count, tray orientation, spacing, and cutting layout.
Edge and Trim Allowance Insufficient margin can cause misalignment; excessive margin increases material waste. State the required edge allowance and acceptable trim.
Printed-Film Registration Printed film requires the artwork repeat and eye mark to align with the cutting tool. Provide print repeat, eye-mark location, artwork orientation, and tolerance.
Machine Roll Capacity The tray sealer must accept the web width, core, roll weight, and outer diameter. Provide machine brand, model, core ID, maximum OD, and maximum roll weight.

Easy-Peel, Medium-Peel, and Weld-Seal Options

Seal Type Opening Performance Typical Use
Easy Peel Peels with controlled force and reduced tearing or residue. Retail ready meals, desserts, chilled foods, and convenience packs.
Medium Peel Balances opening convenience and stronger distribution security. Prepared meals, catering trays, and products exposed to rough handling.
Weld Seal Forms a stronger permanent bond and enhanced tamper evidence. Liquid-containing meals, heavy products, and high-security packaging.

Tray Material Compatibility

Tray sealing depends on the chemistry of the tray flange and sealing layer, not only on the PET carrier or the 230mm roll width. A physical tray sample is the most reliable basis for testing.

Tray Material Compatibility Guidance Typical Application
CPET Primary application for this page. Use a CPET-compatible sealant and validate the heating cycle. Ready meals, frozen meals, airline and institutional catering.
APET / RPET / PET Requires a PET-compatible sealing layer; anti-fog is often requested for chilled display. Meat, produce, bakery, deli, desserts, and chilled meals.
PET/PE A PE-based sealant may bond to a PE-coated flange after compatibility testing. Chilled food and general prepared-food packaging.
PP Do not assume the CPET grade will seal PP; a PP-compatible sealant may be required. Microwave meals, dairy, dips, and prepared foods.
Aluminium or Coated Paperboard A custom sealing layer may be required according to the rim coating and heating process. Ready meals, bakery, and specialty food packs.

Optional Anti-Fog and High-Barrier Film

Anti-fog treatment helps reduce condensation on the inside surface of the lidding film and improves product visibility in chilled display. It is useful for chilled ready meals, meat, produce, bakery, dairy, and foods with high moisture content.

High-barrier grades may include EVOH or another functional layer for modified atmosphere packaging. Buyers should provide the required oxygen transmission rate, water-vapor transmission rate, gas mixture, food type, storage temperature, and target shelf life.

Ovenable and Microwaveable CPET Packaging

CPET trays are frequently used for freezer-to-oven, chiller-to-oven, and microwaveable ready meals. However, the tray heat rating does not automatically apply to the lidding film. The PET carrier, sealant, adhesive, ink, coating, and completed seal must all remain suitable during the specified thermal cycle.

For oven or microwave applications, provide the maximum temperature, heating duration, whether the film remains on the tray during cooking, venting requirements, food type, fill weight, storage conditions, and applicable food-contact regulations.

Typical Applications for 230mm Lidding Film

  • Medium-format CPET ready-meal trays

  • Selected single-compartment and multi-compartment meal trays

  • Airline, railway, hospital, school, and institutional catering meals

  • Frozen pasta, rice, meat, vegetable, and prepared-food trays

  • Bakery products, desserts, deli foods, and prepared snacks

  • MAP and extended-shelf-life food trays

  • Private-label meals requiring custom printed lidding film

Tray-Sealer Compatibility and Line Testing

Seal quality depends on machine design, temperature, pressure, dwell time, film tension, tooling flatness, tray rigidity, flange cleanliness, food contamination, and production speed. Excessive heat can cause shrinkage or overly aggressive seals, while insufficient heat can cause incomplete bonding and leakage.

Before mass production, test roll feeding, web tracking, cut accuracy, seal continuity, peel force, leakage, burst strength, wrinkling, print registration, anti-fog performance, freezer performance, MAP gas retention, microwave performance, and oven performance when applicable.

Yes. Anti-fog treatment can be supplied for chilled meals, meat, produce, bakery, dairy, and other moist foods where condensation may reduce product visibility.

Can HSQY supply high-barrier 230mm film for MAP?

High-barrier structures can be evaluated for modified atmosphere packaging. Provide the target OTR, WVTR, gas mixture, food type, storage temperature, and target shelf life.

Can standard BOPET/PE film be used at 220°C?

It should not be assumed that every BOPET/PE laminate is suitable for 220°C. Conventional-oven use requires an application-specific structure validated with the exact film, tray, food, temperature, heating time, and cooking method.

Can the 230mm film be custom printed?

Yes. Custom printing can include logos, graphics, preparation instructions, product information, traceability content, and date-code areas. Provide artwork, colors, print repeat, eye-mark location, and annual volume.

Why does lidding film wrinkle or track incorrectly?

Common causes include uneven tension, incorrect roll alignment, unsuitable core or outer diameter, damaged roll edges, inconsistent thickness, poor unwind control, tooling misalignment, or excessive heat shrinkage.

Why does the seal leak or peel inconsistently?

Leakage or inconsistent peel can result from incompatible sealant chemistry, contaminated tray rims, incorrect temperature, insufficient pressure or dwell time, uneven tooling, tray deformation, food oils, condensation, or unsuitable storage conditions.

Can the film seal APET, PET/PE, or PP trays?

Different tray materials may require different sealing layers. A grade developed for CPET should not automatically be used for APET, PET/PE, PP, aluminium, or coated paperboard without compatibility testing.

What is the minimum order quantity?

The current stated MOQ is 500kg. Sample and trial quantities depend on available stock, film structure, roll width, and conversion requirements.

How long is the production lead time?

Typical lead time is approximately 10–14 working days after deposit and final specification approval. Printed, high-barrier, or special thermal grades may require additional time.

Can I request a sample before placing a bulk order?

Yes, subject to stock and specification. Send the tray sample, dimensions, machine model, required roll configuration, seal type, food application, storage conditions, and heating process.

How should 230mm lidding-film rolls be stored?

Store rolls in their original protective packaging in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, dust, solvents, and strong odors. Allow cold-stored material to acclimatize before opening.
