What Is Food Grade PVC Thermoforming Sheet?

Food grade PVC thermoforming sheet is a rigid or semi-rigid PVC material manufactured using a formulation selected for a defined food-packaging application. The material is heated and formed into packaging cavities using vacuum-forming, pressure-forming or other compatible thermoforming equipment.

Unlike flexible PVC cling film, rigid thermoforming PVC is designed to retain the shape of the formed package. Depending on the selected grade, it can be converted into trays, clamshells, inserts, blister cavities and other packaging components.

Food-contact suitability depends on the complete PVC formulation rather than virgin resin alone. The food type, contact temperature, contact time, additives, finished package structure and regulatory requirements of the destination market should all be considered before the material is approved for use.

Key Features of PVC Thermoforming Sheet

  • Thermoforming Performance: Suitable formulations can be heated and formed into packaging cavities using compatible thermoforming equipment.

  • Clear Product Visibility: Transparent PVC grades provide good visibility for packaged products.

  • Multiple Surface Options: Glossy, matte and frosted surfaces can be discussed according to packaging requirements.

  • Roll and Sheet Supply: Available in continuous rolls, standard sheets or customized dimensions according to production requirements.

  • Custom Width: Roll widths can be matched to compatible forming equipment within the available manufacturing range.

  • Color Options: Transparent, opaque and selected customized colors are available according to formulation and order quantity.

  • Virgin Material Options: Virgin PVC formulations can be supplied where required by the agreed product specification.

  • Composite Options: Selected PVC/PE structures can be discussed where the finished packaging design requires a multilayer construction.

Special performance requirements such as anti-blocking, anti-static properties, UV stabilization, impact modification, flame performance or specific barrier properties require an appropriate formulation or multilayer structure and should be specified before ordering.

Food Contact Compliance and Documentation

For food-packaging projects, buyers should specify the destination market and required food-contact standard when requesting a quotation. Available test reports and declarations should be matched to the exact material formulation being supplied.

SGS and RoHS documents may be available for applicable products, but these documents should not automatically be treated as proof that every PVC formulation is suitable for every type of direct food contact. Food-contact documentation should be confirmed separately according to the final application.

When contacting HSQY, please provide the food type, expected contact temperature, contact duration, forming process and destination market so that the appropriate grade and available documentation can be evaluated.

Food Grade PVC Sheet Data Sheets

Technical documents are provided for reference. Confirm that the selected data sheet, MSDS and any compliance report correspond to the exact material grade being ordered.

Applications of Food Grade PVC Sheet

Thermoformed Food Packaging

Suitable food-contact PVC grades can be formed into trays, shallow containers, inserts, lids and other rigid packaging components. Thickness and formulation should be selected according to cavity depth, rigidity and filling conditions.

Clamshell Packaging

Transparent thermoforming material can be used for clamshell-style packaging where visibility is important. Material selection should consider hinge design, forming depth and package handling requirements.

Bakery and Confectionery Inserts

Selected PVC grades can be formed into inserts and display packaging for suitable bakery, confectionery and related packaged products after confirming food-contact conditions and temperature requirements.

PVC/PE Packaging Structures

Where a multilayer structure is required, PVC/PE material can be discussed according to the forming, sealing and finished-package requirements. The exact layer structure and sealing performance should be confirmed during project evaluation.

How to Specify PVC Sheet for Thermoforming

For a more accurate quotation and material recommendation, provide the following information with your inquiry:

  • Required thickness and tolerance

  • Roll width or sheet dimensions

  • Required roll weight, roll diameter or roll length

  • Core diameter if required by the forming machine

  • Transparent, opaque or customized color

  • Glossy, matte or frosted surface

  • Thermoforming or vacuum-forming equipment

  • Finished-package dimensions

  • Forming depth

  • Food type being packed

  • Expected contact temperature

  • Expected contact duration

  • Any sealing or lamination requirements

  • Required food-contact standard or destination-market regulation

  • Order quantity and estimated annual volume

  • Destination country or port

For new applications, production trials are recommended before large-volume orders to verify forming conditions, dimensions, package performance and compatibility with the customer's equipment.

Packaging and Delivery Options

  • Sample Packaging: A4-size PVC sheet samples can be packed in protective bags and cartons according to sample availability.

  • Roll Packaging: Approximately 50kg per roll or customized according to roll dimensions and customer requirements.

  • Pallet Packaging: Approximately 500–2000kg per plywood pallet depending on product dimensions and shipment requirements.

  • Container Loading: Loading quantities depend on roll dimensions, pallet configuration, product weight and container type.

  • Delivery Terms: EXW, FOB, CNF and DDU options can be discussed.

  • Typical Lead Time: Approximately 10–14 days after order confirmation and deposit, subject to material specification and volume.

Certifications and Quality Documents

Available certificates and test documents should be verified against the exact product grade being purchased. If your project requires a specific food-contact regulation, migration test, declaration or other compliance document, include that requirement with your inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions About Food Grade PVC Sheet

What is food grade PVC sheet?

Food grade PVC sheet is a PVC material produced using a formulation selected for a defined food-packaging application. Suitability must be confirmed for the intended food, contact conditions and applicable regulatory requirements.

What thickness is recommended for food packaging thermoforming?

The recommended rigid PVC roll range for this product is approximately 0.15mm to 1mm. The appropriate gauge depends on tray dimensions, forming depth, required rigidity and forming equipment.

Can thicker PVC sheet be supplied?

HSQY's broader rigid PVC range includes thicker specifications, but thicker material may be supplied as flat sheets rather than food-packaging rolls. Availability depends on grade, width, forming requirements and application.

What roll widths are available?

Roll widths from approximately 10mm to 1280mm can be discussed. Final available width depends on thickness, roll diameter, edge tolerance, material grade and production feasibility.

Is virgin PVC automatically food safe?

No. Using virgin PVC resin alone does not establish food-contact suitability. The complete formulation, additives, food type, contact temperature, contact duration and applicable destination-market regulations must be considered.

Do SGS and RoHS documents prove that PVC is food-contact compliant?

Not by themselves. SGS is a testing organization and RoHS addresses restricted substances in electrical and electronic products. Food-contact compliance should be confirmed using documents and testing applicable to the exact material, application and destination market.

Can PVC sheet be thermoformed into food trays?

Yes, an appropriate food-contact PVC grade can be vacuum formed or thermoformed into trays and other packaging components. Thickness, heating conditions, mold design and forming depth should be validated during production trials.

What is the difference between PVC and PVC/PE packaging material?

Rigid PVC is used as the structural thermoforming layer, while a PVC/PE structure combines PVC with a polyethylene layer for applications requiring additional sealing or surface characteristics. The exact construction should be selected according to the finished packaging system.

Can I request a sample before bulk production?

Sample availability depends on thickness, width, surface, color and food-contact grade. Providing your forming and packaging requirements helps us identify a more suitable material for testing.

What is the minimum order quantity?

The listed MOQ is 1000kg. Final MOQ may vary for customized colors, multilayer structures, special surface treatments or application-specific formulations.

What information should I provide for a quotation?

Please provide thickness, width or sheet size, surface, color, food type, contact conditions, thermoforming requirements, required compliance standard, order quantity and delivery destination. Finished tray dimensions and forming depth are also useful for thermoforming projects.
