What Is Clear Rigid PET Sheet?

Clear rigid PET sheet is a transparent polyester material supplied in rolls or sheets for thermoforming, packaging, printing and fabrication. For many transparent thermoforming applications, the material structure is APET, or amorphous polyethylene terephthalate.

APET is widely evaluated for food trays, clamshells, blisters and transparent retail packaging because it combines clarity, rigidity, impact resistance and practical thermoforming performance.

When sourcing PET sheet, buyers should define the exact structure rather than relying only on the word “PET,” especially when recycled content, heat sealing, anti-fog, anti-static or other functional performance is required.

Key Features of Clear Rigid PET Sheet

High Transparency

Clear PET provides good product visibility for food trays, clamshells, retail blisters, folding boxes and transparent packaging. The available PET data sheet lists approximately 89% light transmission as a general reference value.

Thermoforming Performance

Suitable PET and APET grades can be vacuum formed or thermoformed into trays, lids, blisters and other rigid packaging components. Forming performance depends on gauge, heater profile, cavity depth, draw ratio and cooling conditions.

Rigid Packaging Structure

PET provides practical stiffness and impact resistance for packaging, handling, stacking and transport while maintaining a clear finished appearance.

Chemical Resistance

The available PET data sheet describes resistance to many acids, alcohols, salts and selected hydrocarbons. Compatibility should still be verified with the actual chemical, concentration, temperature and contact duration.

Roll and Sheet Supply

PET can be supplied as rollstock for continuous thermoforming lines or as custom-cut sheets for printing, folding, die cutting and fabrication.

Custom Functional Grades

Anti-fog, anti-scratch, anti-static, UV-stabilized and other functional PET grades can be evaluated where required. These functions should be written into the purchase specification together with the required test method and acceptance criteria.

Clear PET Sheet for Food Packaging

Food Trays and Containers

Clear PET rollstock can be thermoformed into trays and containers for suitable fresh, chilled and ambient food-packaging applications where visibility and package rigidity are important.

Clamshell Packaging

PET can be formed into hinged clamshells for produce, bakery products, salads and other suitable foods. Gauge and hinge design should be selected according to pack dimensions, product weight and required rigidity.

Fresh Produce Packaging

Transparent PET helps consumers inspect fruit, vegetables and other fresh products through the package. Where condensation is expected, an anti-fog grade should be evaluated separately.

Bakery and Dessert Packaging

PET can be used for clear bakery lids, clamshells and display packaging where visibility and dimensional stability are required.

Food-Contact Qualification

For food packaging, confirm the exact PET grade, food type, contact side, storage temperature, contact duration and destination market. Request current product-specific food-contact documentation before commercial approval.

Other Clear PET Sheet Applications

Blister Packaging

Clear PET can be thermoformed into blister cavities and transparent inserts for consumer products, cosmetics, hardware, stationery and other retail packaging.

Folding Boxes and Clear Windows

Suitable PET sheet can be die cut, creased and folded into transparent boxes, carton windows and display components. Crease geometry and sheet thickness should be tested to minimize cracking or stress whitening.

Printing

PET can be printed using compatible ink systems after confirming surface energy, ink adhesion and curing conditions. Surface-treated or coated grades should be tested separately.

Binding Covers and Transparent Components

Cut PET sheet can also be used for binding covers, protective windows, dividers, displays and other clear fabricated components.

PET vs. APET vs. RPET vs. PET/PE

Material Typical Purpose Important Buyer Check
PET General polyethylene terephthalate material family Confirm exact grade and material structure
APET Clear rigid thermoforming, trays, clamshells and blisters Gauge, optics, forming depth and food-contact scope
RPET Packaging requiring a defined recycled-content target Recycled content, layer structure, clarity and traceability
PET/PE Thermoformed packaging requiring a dedicated PE heat-sealing layer PE layer, peel or weld seal, lidding film and sealing parameters

Does Clear PET Sheet Heat Seal Directly?

Plain PET or APET should not automatically be assumed to seal to every lidding film. Heat-seal performance depends on the material surface, coating or laminate construction and the selected top web.

If the thermoformed tray must be heat sealed, provide the intended lidding-film structure, sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time and required peel strength. A PET/PE laminate or compatible sealing coating may be more appropriate for some tray-sealing systems.

PET Service Temperature vs. Thermoforming Temperature

The temperature used to heat PET during thermoforming is not the same as the allowable service temperature of the finished package.

The general PET data sheet available on this page lists a reference maximum service temperature of approximately 60°C and advises that finished articles should not be continuously exposed above approximately 65°C depending on the application.

Do not use forming heater settings as an end-use temperature claim. Validate the completed package under the actual filling, storage, transportation and use conditions.

Outdoor and UV Exposure

Standard PET should not automatically be treated as a long-term UV-stabilized material. The available PET data sheet notes that extended ultraviolet exposure can cause yellowing, lower light transmission and loss of mechanical properties.

For long-term outdoor applications, specify a UV-stabilized PET grade and define the expected exposure conditions rather than assuming standard clear PET provides permanent weathering resistance.
